Vice President Integrated Marketing and Online Communications

Location: Washington, D.C.
Supervisor: Senior Vice President for Constituent Development

Position Description

The Vice President for Integrated Marketing and Online Communications is responsible for Defenders’ multi-channel marketing and online communication efforts and directs integrated programs to solicit, engage and cultivate constituents through direct mail, email, web, telemarketing, mobile and other channels.  S/he takes an entrepreneurial approach to plan, execute, and analyze a dynamic and innovative recruitment, fundraising, and activist program for Defenders of Wildlife.  These activities are executed within the organizational, programmatic, and financial goals established by the President and Senior Vice President for Marketing and Constituent Development.  S/he also provides insight into broader Defenders’ communication and brand strategies and fosters an environment conducive to constituent satisfaction, as well as employee achievement and fulfillment.  This position also provides advice and support to Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund’s marketing and online communications programs as needed.     

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Program Management

  • Develops and manages multi-year work plan focused on growing and sustaining revenue, expanding constituencies and other performance goals through effective marketing techniques and aggressive testing. Develops and monitors all relevant program metrics, including online and offline marketing activity, return on investment, long term value, activism rates, revenue, expenses and overall profitability of the program and implementation of the work plan.
  • Manages staff teams and consultants responsible for direct marketing programs, production, website and social media, and online activist campaigns to ensure annual and ongoing work plan goals are met.
  • Works closely with Vice President of Operations to define needs and program strategy so that Operations can effectively support the marketing strategy and goals.
  • With Senior Vice President, oversees Defenders’ integrated content marketing strategy focused on donor fundraising and retention. Works in partnership with Communications staff to ensure a consistent message and branding and to present Defenders as a credible thought leader with a results-oriented approach.
  • Ensures integration across diverse marketing channels, programs, content and cross-departmental teams. Maximizes integration across giving channels with an emphasis on return on investment/donor lifetime value. Oversees:
    • The development of online strategies to recruit new donors, to convert e-newsletter subscribers and e-activists into donors, and, through the deployment of issue campaigns, to generate additional gifts from the online donor base.
    • Wildlife Adoption Center strategy including product development and online and offline promotion.
    • Mobile campaigns and acquisition.
    • Direct mail and telemarketing strategy in coordination with agency of record.
    • Strategy and content development for quarterly Newsletter.
    • Engagement strategy for www.defenders.org, all Defenders’ websites, blogs and social network activities, which include a website redesign scheduled to launch in spring 2012.
    • Testing and evaluation of the effectiveness of new channels, such as Web 2.0 activities.

General Management

  • Develops and manages annual operating and capital budgets for the direct response program. Monitors, evaluates and reports on performance of each program against budget projections and develops budget reports and analysis for senior staff and the Board. Ensures compliance with accounting standards.
  • Oversees the preparation of quarterly reports from the direct response team for the President’s Office and the Board, and makes presentations at Board meetings as requested.
  • Develops short- and long-range operating objectives, organizational structure, and staffing requirements. Ensures optimum performance of group function. Recommends and implements techniques to improve productivity, increase efficiencies, cut costs and maintain state-of-the-art practices.
  • Ensures communication of duties and responsibilities to direct reports and monitor performance. Recommends, reviews, and approves employment actions, including interviewing, hiring, promotions and raises, in conjunction with Human Resources. Partners with Human Resources in the handling of disciplinary issues.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) or equivalent in marketing, communications, or a related discipline. Advanced degree/Master’s of Business Administration (MBA) preferred.
  • Experience:
    • 8+ years of progressively responsible direct response experience including 5+ years of relevant management/supervisory experience.
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
  • Other:
    • Deep understanding of database marketing and member lifecycle management.
    • Sophisticated understanding of advocacy and donor programs.
    • Creative, innovative, and analytic problem-solver with both strong conceptual abilities and attention to detail.
    • Demonstrated success in developing strategies and managing programs to increase the number of donors and net income using both offline and online techniques.
    • Strong communications skills and a team approach to work with an array of consultants, staff and donors.
    • Knowledge of current Website design, techniques, and technologies.
    • Knowledge of current Internet trends and opportunities.
    • Must be results-oriented and able to balance competing management priorities; competing and overlapping projects; and multiple demands on department resources.
    • Must be able to work well under pressure.
  • Physical Demands:
    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use a computer and communicate with others while doing so.
  • Work Environment:
    • General office working conditions, the noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
