The mission of the Wild Salmon Center (WSC) is to identify, understand and protect the best wild salmon ecosystems of the Pacific Rim. WSC devises and implements practical strategies, based on the best science, to protect forever these extraordinary places and their biodiversity. WSC is an international organization with a staff of 30 and is based in Portland, Oregon, in the Jean Vollum Natural Capital Center.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Vice President for Conservation Programs provides overall leadership for Wild Salmon Center's conservation programs, including day-to-day management of the North America program. He or she will devise and execute strategic initiatives and conservation campaigns to influence policy and advance programmatic objectives, with a focus on North America, and will ensure alignment of strategies and operations across all conservation programs. The Vice President for Conservation Programs directly supervises the conservation program directors and the North America program managers, and serves as a member of the Organization's senior management team. In addition, the Vice President for Conservation Programs works with the CEO and Wild Salmon Center Board of Directors to keep them informed of programmatic strategies and challenges.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Lead Wild Salmon Center's conservation programs and directly supervise conservation program directors. Ensure alignment of conservation strategies and operations across programs toward organizational objectives.
  • Devise and execute strategic initiatives and conservation campaigns to influence policy at federal and state levels and advance programmatic objectives in North America. Oversee the day-to-day management of the North America program including the direct supervision of North America program managers.   
  • Prepare and submit annual operating budgets for conservation programs, manage effectively within the budget, and report accurately on progress made and challenges encountered.
  • Manage and cultivate relationships with existing and new funders to secure and expand funding for conservation programs.
  • Participate on the senior management team to provide strategic and operational direction for the Organization.

Key Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree or master’s degree (preferred) in a related field of study.
  • At least 10 years of professional experience in a related field and a track record of leadership success. 
  • Proven experience devising, funding and implementing conservation (or similar) campaign strategies--including communications, grassroots organizing and legislation--within a national or international NGO or governmental organization.
  • Demonstrated planning, analytical and organizational skills with the ability to think strategically and creatively, and execute effectively with tight deadlines without compromising quality.
  • Excellence in program management with the ability to coach senior-level staff to manage and develop high-performance teams and develop and implement program strategies. 
  • Demonstrated ability to negotiate, influence, and collaborate with both internal and external stakeholders including governmental agencies and delegations, foundations, and other NGOs.
  • Ability and willingness to travel as needed within the United States and internationally. 

Hours of Work

This is a full-time regular position that is exempt from federal Fair Labor Standards Act overtime rules.
