Reporting to CEO Lyndon Rive, the Vice President of Residential Sales will manage the entire residential sales organization. This includes a growing field and headquarters-based sales and supporting technical team, channels and inside sales. In conjunction with the VP of Commercial Sales, this position also directs sales operations.  The Vice President of Residential Sales will have full general management responsibilities for this function, including annual budget.
 
As a senior member of SolarCity’s management team, the recruited executive will be expected to join in the formulation of the company‘s budget and strategy based on knowledge of the market.  As a general manager, s/he will be expected to implement parts of that strategy, in accordance with budget parameters, through the effective management of the residential sales function. 
 
Since the market opportunity is robust and the offering in high demand, the residential sales organization will grow as SolarCity® continues to expand nationally.  The VP of Residential Sales will be expected to recruit, train and motivate a highly competent, productive team.  Collaboratively running a nimble sales operations function that provides mechanisms and metrics to monitor, refine and optimize performance will be key to profitable expansion.
 
Overview
The Vice President of Residential Sales will be responsible for capitalizing on our current Residential solar business and identifying and pursuing targeted new opportunities for growth. 
Responsibilities:

  • Achieve or exceed company sales targets for the residential market
  • Open new markets in collaboration with regional directors in new states and utility territories
  • Manage, hire, train, develop, and motivate the residential sales team to achieve sales quotas and objectives by developing and implementing plans necessary to grow the residential  solar business
  • Work collaboratively with the VP of Commercial Sales to manage and develop a top performing sales operations function
  • Prepare and execute short- and long-term sales training that address existing and new product and market opportunities
  • Strengthen rapport with all levels of the sales organization by delivering sales strategies, refining internal processes; develop/refine of sales tools, reporting, etc.
  • Manage and grow large centralized sales call center
  • Manage and grow effective, highly leveraged channel sales team
  • Consistently evaluate the market/industry, the customer base, the areas of potential sales opportunities, and the competitive landscape
  • Collaborate with marketing to create and implement innovative marketing and advertising and campaigns to maximize lead generation, business development and revenue
  • Evaluate marketing program effectiveness (e.g. promotions, advertising, referral, etc.) and make recommendations on improvements or changes. Work in close collaboration with the marketing team on new market roll-out, program creation and execution
  • Review and update sales compensation salaries/commissions based on competitive and market analyses
  • Develop and manage residential sales budgets

 
The  ideal candidate will have the following personal attributes and experience: 

  • A bachelor’s degree is assumed: an advanced degree would be considered a plus.
  • 15 years or more demonstrating progressive accomplishment with increasingly responsible sales and sales management roles.
  • Must have excellent management and leadership traits. Leads by example, out-in the field, not behind a desk.
  • Dynamic, energetic leader with a “can do” attitude who can figure out how to get things done quickly and effectively. Strong sense of urgency and priority
  • Proven success building and leading substantial, high growth, distributed profitable sales organizations. Includes channels, inside sales and supporting technical teams
  • Knowledge about how to identify and develop strategic growth plans and partnerships for market expansion
  • Be metric driven
  • Strong proficiency with MS Office and Salesforce.com or similar CRM application
  • Ability to deliver compelling sales trainings and presentations to develop sales organization. Appreciates the value of and is driven by customer satisfaction
  • Excellent market reputation; viewed as an “A” player, able to attract “A” players
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal
  • While toughness and performance orientation are vital, SolarCity expects the VP Residential Sales to work well with clients, peers, and employees and outside resources
