The Position:
Under direction of the Clean Vehicles Deputy Director, the Vehicles Analyst will manage, design and carry out research to analyze and assess transportation issues, with a focus on advanced vehicles, such as battery electric and fuel cell vehicles; conduct modeling in support of a variety of analytic products; compile, write and edit reports or sections of reports to document and communicate research results; help develop and recommend transportation policies; promote policies to media, government and public; provide technical and policy assistance to government; provide resources and information on transportation issues to the public, coalition members, and others; serve as spokesperson on key technical and policy issues; represent UCS, its philosophy and positions at various public forums.
Responsibilities:
• Set research objectives and goals; plan and coordinate overall research projects; determine sub-projects which contribute to overall objective. Help plan and design appropriate research and analysis methods in accordance with scientifically sound principles and techniques.
• Write and edit technical and policy papers, magazine/journal articles, and other materials for publication
• Collaborate with analytic, policy, outreach, and media staff to apply research results and conclusions to the formulation and development of public policies, political strategies, and communication efforts to promote viable transportation technologies.
• Establish and maintain alliances with researchers at other organizations to exchange information, share resources and engage in collaborative studies.
Qualifications:
Requires knowledge that can be applied to the transportation field, including technology, equipment and systems, and current issues and their political/social/environmental/economic ramifications. Position also requires interest in and aptitude for understanding public policy aspects of transportation and related climate and energy issues and the role of technical analyses and advocacy in shaping public opinion and policy debates. Preferred candidates will have training or experience with public speaking and technical writing for general audiences. Strong quantitative and analytical skills; proficiency with visual basic, Matlab, LEAP or other modeling and systems analysis tools, computer spreadsheets and word processors.
Experience:
Minimum of two years progressively responsible related experience for candidates with Master’s degree, including background in research and analysis of sophisticated engineering/economic systems. Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree require a minimum of four to six years of progressively responsible experience in related areas. Direct experience with input-output models, stock and flow models, and engineering economic models is preferred. Position also requires familiarity with economics and public policy.
