The Community Garden and Orchard Assistant will provide a broad range of support to Evergreen BC’s community development and food security programs.
Responsibilities:
• Work with the Community Development Coordinator to develop strategic food security programming around Evergreen BC’s two food growing sites – the City Hall Community Garden and the Great Northern Way Urban Orchard
• Assist in developing and strengthening community partnerships that support the goals of Evergreen BC’s food programming
• Develop communication materials to promote food security programming (e.g. brochures, blogs, etc)
• Coordinate workshops on gardening and food growing at the City Hall Community Garden
• Coordinate and implement regular ‘work parties’ at the City Hall Community Garden
• Assist the Community Development coordinator with administrative and operational tasks at the Community Garden and at the Urban Orchard
• Respond to community gardeners’ requests for maintenance, etc.
• Assist with maintaining the Urban Orchard trees and greenhouse seedlings – watering, fertilization, pest management, pruning, etc.
• Support the delivery of other community development and urban ecology programming around Metro Vancouver as required.
Skills and Qualifications:
• Strong event planning and coordination skills
• Experience in program development and coordination an asset
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Excellent presentation skills
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
• Strong knowledge of sustainability, community development and urban agriculture
• Experience with food growing at asset
• Familiarity with social media tools an asset
• Positive, outgoing and not afraid to get your hands dirty!

• Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
• Have been registered as a full-time student in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year;
• Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act ; and,
• Be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.
Work terms:
This contract runs until September 1st of 2012, for 38 hours per week at $13.50 an hour.
