BACKGROUND
 
Wetlands International works globally, regionally and nationally to achieve the conservation and wise use of wetlands, to benefit biodiversity and human well-being.  It is the only global NGO dedicated to the conservation and wise use of wetlands.
 
It is an independent, not-for-profit, global organisation supported by government and NGO membership from all continents of the world, a specialist expert network and volunteers. We work through a network of regional, country offices and project offices – in the European continent, Africa, South, East and North Asia, Oceania, and Latin America; with our head office in the Netherlands. All our offices contribute to develop and implement our global Strategy and are accountable for performance against the global targets.
We are a science-based organisation producing tools and information to assist the development and implementation of relevant policies, conventions and treaties that are required to achieve wetland conservation. We are a source of “best-informed” opinion on key issues affecting wetlands and priority actions for their conservation and wise use, drawing on scientific analyses and our own experience in global and national conservation and natural resource management programmes. In doing this work, we are responsive to the needs expressed by governments, industry sectors, local communities and other stakeholders.

To support our work at national and regional levels, Wetlands International, Malaysia is seeking qualified Malaysians with a passion and commitment to nature conservation to join our team.
 

(1)    SENIOR TECHICAL OFFICER

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 
The Senior Technical Officer will report to the Head of Office, Wetlands International, Malaysia.  He/she will be responsible for the following: 
  • Management and coordination of selected projects implemented by Wetlands International
  • Preparation of scientific and technical reports when required.
  • Management of contracts of consultants working on the relevant projects to ensure quality of key outputs and timely delivery.
  • Communication and liaison with government agencies and other partners in relation to project development and implementation.
  • Representing the organisation at meetings, seminars and conferences (local and international).
  • Assisting in the development of new projects / initiatives that will contribute to Wetlands International's Strategic Intent in relation to national priorities.
  • Respond to general technical queries related to the work of Wetlands International.
  • Facilitation of training workshops in relation to wetland conservation and wise use.
  • Liaison with other Wetlands International offices in developing / contributing specific programmes.
  • Lead and participate in field assessments and complete relevant assessment reports as and when required. 
REQUIREMENTS
 
This is a national position and applications are only open to Malaysian nationals. Candidates should possess the following:
  • A higher University degree in a relevant discipline (eg. botany, conservation, biology, landscape ecology, marine sciences, natural resource management etc.).  A candidate with a MSc. with demonstrated relevant experience will be an added advantage.
  • A confident communicator with an appropriate list of relevant publications.
  • Proficiency with computer software applications (particularly Microsoft Office products).  Experience in Georgraphical Information System (GIS) mapping and databases would be an asset.
  • Proven track record in developing and implementing projects.  Ability to work flexibly and with initiative.
  • Proven management skills, preferably with experience of supervising staff / volunteers and working with consultants.
  • Ability to handle multi-tasking and to work effectively to tight deadlines without compromising quality.
  • A team player with strong organizational skills and able to pay attention to details.
  • The successful candidate should be fluent in English and Bahasa Malaysia.  Fluency in other languages spoken in Malaysia would be an added advantage.
  • Willingness to travel (eg. for field work, workshops and meetings/conferences) is essential.
  • Possess a valid driving licence.

 

2)   TECHNICAL OFFICER

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the overall guidance of the Head of Office, the Technical officer will be responsible for the following:

  • Assist in the coordination of selected projects implemented by Wetlands International.
  • Assist in the preparation of scientific and technical reports when required.
  • Communicate and liaise with government agencies and other partners in relation to project development and implementation.
  • Representing the organisation at meetings, seminars and conferences (local and international) as directed by the Head of Office.
  • Assist in the development of new projects/ initiatives that will contribute to Wetlands International's Strategic Intent in relation to national priorities.
  • Assist to respond to general technical queries related to the work of Wetlands International.
  • assist in the compilation of material and facilitation of training workshops in reation to wetland conservation and wise use.
  • Assist and participate in field assessments and compile relevant assessment reports as and when required.

REQUIRMENTS

  • A higher University degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. botany, conservation biology, landscape ecology, marine sciences, natural resource management etc.)  A candidate with a BSc. with relevant experience will also be considered.
  • Knowledge related to wetlands and conservation.
  • Possess good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency with computer software applications (particularly Microsoft Office products).  Experience in Geographical Information System (GIS) naooubg abd datavases would be an asset.
  • Ability to handle multi-tasking and to work effectively to tight deadlines without compromising quality.
  • The successful candidate will be fluent in English and Bahasa Malaysia.  Fluency in other languages spoken in Malaysia would be an added advantange.
  • Willingness to travel (e.g. for field work, workshops and meetings/conferences) is essential.
  • A team player with positive work attitude, responsible, consistent, committed, result orientated, creative and hardworking.
  • Possess a valid driving licence.
