American Bird Conservancy (ABC), the leading bird conservation organization in the United States, is seeking a talented, experienced, motivated writer-editor to assist with the organization’s outreach and communications efforts in its office in Washington, DC.

 

The writer-editor will be ABC’s primary feature story writer and editor for its flagship publication Bird Conservation magazine, and will also write and edit a broad selection of other materials, including web copy, fundraising solicitations, newsletter articles, and e-communications.

 

The writer-editor will work collaboratively with all ABC staff to raise awareness of organizational priorities, achievements, and needs. The successful applicant will be able to articulate sometimes complex conservation and scientific principles relating to bird conservation in a clear, compelling, accurate manner for a broad cross section of audiences, including conservation professionals, ABC members, and members of the public.

Primary Duties:

    1. Write in-depth feature articles focusing on national bird conservation priorities, including ABC projects and programs, for its magazine Bird Conservation.

 

    1. Edit for style, spelling, grammar, and tone a range of ABC publications and communications including Bird Conservation magazine, Bird Calls newsletter, Bird News Network e-newsletters, and scientific and policy papers and reports.

 

    1. Generate ideas for new stories and magazine themes, and interview staff members and external subject matter experts to solicit ideas and material for articles.

 

    1. Develop an organization-wide writing style that will be the voice of ABC

 

    1. Cultivate a network of information sources and guest contributors.

 

 

Position Requirements:

    1. A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, or biological science and at least five years of published experience in journalism or feature writing, and proven editing experience or an equivalent combination of experience and education.

 

    1. Knowledge of birds and conservation principles.

 

    1. Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently, and meet deadlines.

 

    1. Excellent oral and written communications skills.

 

    1. Must be committed to ABC’s conservation mission (see www.abcbirds.org).
