The use of statistics is core to helping DECC meet the challenges of energy security and climate change. If successful, you would be part of a team of six responsible for the production of statistics and information on the UK oil and gas industry, covering production, refining, stocks and consumption. The team also provides analytical support during any oil and gas supply emergencies. The role offers the opportunity to be involved in the three areas of the team’s work:
Data Collection – running quarterly and monthly data surveys of company-level data by collecting and validating information. Also covers investigation of information from other sources to monitor trading in the oil and gas markets
Data Analysis - producing summaries and detailed analysis of team’s databases in preparation of outputs for the team’s publications and completion of domestic and international data submissions. This involves preparation of charts and tables together with explanatory text
Ad-hoc work to support the team - these are often small queries to help the team with its work. However, there is also the opportunity for more significant work, for publications or briefing material for Ministers and officials. Recently, students have contributed to publications on:
You would also have opportunities to attend the DECC School to develop an understanding of energy and climate change policies, industries, markets and key technologies.
In order to meet these requirements, the student will need to demonstrate the following competences when completing the joined application form and during the interview:
Sound numeracy, along with a grasp of descriptive and inferential statistics
Interpersonal and team working skills
An ability to apply themselves to solving problems
An ability to work accurately without the need for supervision on some projects; and
Proficiency in IT packages that we use in our day to day work (basic skills in Excel, Word, and Access would be an advantage)
