The Wilderness Ranger Intern Corps Program is a relatively new SCA partnership that offers a valuable and enjoyable opportunity to help the US Forest Service (USFS) monitor the use of - and impacts to - it’s beautiful wilderness areas in the Pacific Northwest. Participants in this program will work in 3 – 6 teams of 2 - 4 members, supervised by two onsite Project Leaders, stationed in a location(s) central to the sites the team is tasked with monitoring.

Members, primarily in pairs, will collect wilderness use information, primarily through backcountry surveys. The survey sites include some of the most beautiful wilderness areas in the country. Teamwork will be a key to success in travel logistics, travelling throughout backcountry sites and implementing a safe and effective program. Conditions may be rugged.

Member responsibilities include: Collecting recreation site inventory data to identify where and how people are recreating within each wilderness and documenting the effects; Collecting invasive species information and provide data on invasive plants threatening wildernesses, following Forest Service protocols; Entering information in a large scale oracle database and into a Geographic Information System so maps can be created; Communicating with the public; Promoting safety and maintaining wilderness values/ethics while producing communication materials that successfully explain significant work accomplishments.

Project leaders will be responsible for supervising all of the above, plus provide and schedule all onsite logistical support, design and oversee any additional service projects, oversee appropriate upkeep of the program housing and food, and create a productive group environment for the team – including our agency partners.

Project Leader position dates:

  • Program start approx.. June 11, 2012 and ends September 30, 2012.
  • Program members arrive on 6/25/2012, and end 9/24/2012.

The 2012 Wilderness Ranger Corps interns will spend their time in the field at:

  • Alpine Lakes Wilderness Area
  • Glacier Peaks Wilderness Area
  • Additional northwest USFS wilderness areas

Housing will be a shared house or houses central to the various locations being surveyed and backcountry camping while on hitch.

The first week of employment will consist of the following training:

  • o SCA Corps Member Training in WA (5 days)
  • o Meetings with SCA staff and site visits (as needed at/following training)

Project Leaders will spend approx. 1weeks logistically preparing their sites, helping to organize trainings,
meeting with agency contacts, etc.

The survey work begins immediately after members join USFS staff at a seasonal Wilderness Ranger training
and SCA orientation during their first week.
