POSITION SUMMARY

The Nature Conservancy in New York seeks an Urban Marine Ecologist in New York City. The Conservancy’s NYC Program, started two years ago in the wake of Superstorm Sandy, is working to create a healthy, resilient and sustainable city environment.  Building on the Conservancy’s science-based, collaborative, results-oriented approach and its record of contributing creative and effective solutions to conservation challenges, the growing NYC Program is implementing a suite of projects that will help the city conserve and benefit from nature, enhance the quality of life for all New Yorkers and develop the next generation of urban conservation leaders.

This exciting endeavor influences the work of the Conservancy in New York, the Conservancy’s growing urban conservation efforts across the United States, and around the world.   The New York City Urban Marine Ecologist reports to the NYC Program Urban Ecologist and is part of growing a team that also includes the Program Director, an Urban Spatial Ecologist, a Program Coordinator, and a Research and Outreach Coordinator. S/he will provide strategic support to the overall efforts of the NYC Program team, and to the individual staff members on the team. S/he will also work with staff members across New York, regionally (CT and NJ), and globally on issues that impact urban marine conservation initiatives.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Urban Marine Ecologist develops, manages, and advances marine conservation programs, plans, and projects for the NY Harbor, a unique urban estuary. S/he is responsible for building the base of scientific knowledge of the local marine environment, working with the Billion Oyster Project to monitor and advance their restoration projects, developing strategies to improve habitat productivity, and providing scientific information to inform public policy for marine environmental concerns.

The Urban Marine Ecologist provides intellectual and technical leadership to the New York City Program by planning, directing, and implementing marine conservation programs and stewardship. S/he addresses critical threats to the New York Harbor’s marine communities, with particular attention to restoring oysters and fisheries to enhance ecosystem services and resiliency while developing partnerships with the marine conservation community. Key to this effort will be our partnership with the Billion Oyster Project.

S/he develops and implements conservation strategies for improving water quality, restoring oysters and their associates, supporting people’s well-being including addressing resiliency and water quality issues, and providing relevant research opportunities for high school students as well as the general public.  S/he develops innovative scientific methods, analyses, tools and frameworks to address the natural system needs; helps make the case for nature-based infrastructure; engages community support for local conservation efforts; and negotiates complex and innovative solutions with government agencies, landowners and other stakeholders to conserve and protect natural and human communities.

Specifically, this staff member will:

  • Monitor planned and ongoing oyster restoration projects in the NY Harbor and Hudson River, including Billion Oyster Project sites, utilizing the capacity of high school students who are trained scientific divers as well as other public and private partners;
