ICLEI's member cities drive innovation by pioneering the development and application of new processes, instruments, methods and tools for local sustainability. The further development of Local Agenda 21 into a coherent and mainstreamed local governance process, combined with the application of cyclic and integrated sustainability management systems, is one of the major aims of ICLEI's current work in Europe.

The European Secretariat of ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability - offers a Trainer (Project Officer) position for the implementation of projects carried out by the Urban Governance and Sustainability Management Team.

DATE/DURATION:

Start 1 October 2009

Tasks and responsibilities:

- Support local governments throughout Europe in implementing innovative governance approaches and integrated management in a variety of urban themes, e.g. climate adaptation, natural resources management, citizens' lifestyles, mobility, etc.

- The Officer will carry this out both directly in the form of training and consultancy services, or in the framework of larger projects assigned to him/her.

- Develop future projects and services in these fields, and implement them both independently and as part of a project team under the supervision of the Directors for Urban Governance and Sustainability Management.

- More general projects, presentations and other tasks are also part of the position.

 

Skills required:

- Professional experience: Advanced understanding of local environmental/sustainability management systems and governance practices (Local Agenda 21, awareness raising, participation, etc).

- Experience as a trainer/consultant for local governments.

- At least two years in a similar position.

- Education: Academic degree in a relevant field (environmental or sustainability management, social or administrative science, geography, etc.), specific expertise in local sustainable development processes will be an advantage.

- Computing: Use of MS Office, databases, e-mail and www; experience in web editing, desk top publishing and/or graphics software will be an advantage.

- Organisational skills: High communicative competence (orally and in writing), Strong writing, presentation and facilitation skills, Team player, pro-active working style, ability to work self-organised within a complex team.

- Languages: Very good English and German (orally, read and in writing), and one further European language, further language skills an asset.

Conditions:

- Corridor contract 80-100% with a gross salary according to Project Officer in ICLEI's salary grid (indicative: EUR 31.200 to 39.600 per annum for 100%);

- Start date: 1 October 2009, one year contract, extension intended.

- Place of work: ICLEI European Secretariat, Freiburg, Germany.

- Working hours: 80-100% of the following: 40h/week, six weeks of paid leave per annum.

- Working language: English.

- Readiness for frequent travel.
