Description

Bird Studies Canada is looking for a motivated individual to coordinate a large, multi-year start-up project in the city of Toronto. The Urban Bird Project Coordinator will work with project partners (Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto Ornithological Club) and the Ontario Program Manager, to develop, coordinate and deliver a Toronto Urban Bird Project. This project will engage urban residents in bird conservation, increase awareness of birds and urban wildlife and increase the number of volunteers in BSC programs. The position will be based in Toronto but the candidate will occasionally travel to BSC Headquarters in Port Rowan or to BSC's Regional Office in Ottawa.

Responsibilities will include:

  • developing an implementation plan
  • developing and adapting bird monitoring protocols for a large urban centre
  • recruiting and training volunteers
  • liaising with partners
  • representing BSC at public events
  • delivering workshops
  • data entry
  • preparing annual reports
  • preparing a State of Toronto's Birds report
  • work with the Ontario Program Manager to secure additional funding for the project.

Position Qualifications:

  • M.Sc. in biology or a related field with relevant work experience
  • Demonstrated organizational skills
  • volunteer management skills
  • strong interpersonal and partnership-building skills
  • independence and initiative;
  • experience preparing budgets
  • excellent oral and written communication skills
  • bird identification skills (by sight and sound)
  • project management experience
  • valid driver's licence

Position Assets:

  • fundraising skills
  • familiarity with the Toronto area and project partners
  • experience with data analysis

Salary

This is a full-time 7-month term position (1 September 2012 - 31 March 2013). The position will be renewable annually on a part-time basis (equivalent of 9-mo/year) based on funding and performance. Salary commensurate with experience (range: $2,600-$3,000/mo plus mandatory legal benefits and medical benefits).
