This youth exchange programme, supported by FK Norway, aims to raise environmental awareness among youth, to strengthen and sustain the Africa Youth Environment Network, to facilitate and ensure that young people are given the chance and opportunity to contribute to policy frameworks for sustainable development, to strengthen the capacity of African and Norwegian youth in assessing and reporting on environmental issues; and, to create synergies between the work of UNEP, its collaborating centres and African youth in the field of environmental assessment and reporting.

The programme  is to be implemented by UNEP/GRID-Arendal as the Primary Partner, and the Southern African Research and Documentation Centre (SARDC – South Africa), The Uganda National Environment Management Authority (NEMA-Uganda), Environmental Information Systems – Africa (EIS-AFRICA), Centre for Environment and Development for the Arab Region & Europe (CEDARE - Egypt), Network for Environment and Sustainable Development in Africa (REDDA/NESDA – Cote d’lvoire, and Southern African Research and Documentation Centre (SARDC – Zimbabwe) as the Secondary Partners.

The exchange programme will be for the duration of six (6) months, beginning 23rd March 2009. It will include a 1-month preparatory course in Norway, a 3-month posting period abroad, and a 2-month homecoming/follow up activities in Norway. The programme involves North-South, South-North and South-South components. 

UNEP/GRID-Arendal is currently looking for candidates from which to select FIVE individuals to participate in the North-South component of the programme.
The FK participant must be between 18 and 25 years old, a Norwegian national (or of other nationality but a legal resident in Norway) and is willing to be based in one of the 5 collaborating centres. The participant must be proficient in English (French and Arabic is desirable but not necessary). The candidate should be able to work with minimum supervision, and willing to travel within the Africa region.
 Main tasks of the participants:
The 5 successful candidates will participate in a 1-week course conducted by FK Norway (Fredskorpset) in Oslo and a 3- week workshop hosted and run by GRID-Arendal in Arendal.  Also attending this course will be 10 participants from African countries, 2 participants from each of the following countries: Uganda, South Africa, Egypt, Zimbabwe or Zambia, and Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast).

After the month-long preparatory course, the 5 Norwegian participants and 5 of the 10 African participants will start their 3-month posting period in Africa. 1 Norwegian and 1 African will be based in one UNEP collaborating centre during this period. The remaining 5 African participants will be based at UNEP/GRID-Arendal for3 months. At the end of their posting periods, all 15 participants will spend the last 2 months of the exchange in their respective home countries to carry out follow-up activities.
The participants are expected to undertake the following tasks/duties:
  • Assist the Collaborating Centre focal points in collecting and coordinating the production of the AEO (Africa Environment Outlook) for Youth materials through:
                      -          Facilitating meetings and workshops
                      -          Writing reports and articles
  • Conduct an introduction workshop in connection with the preparatory course.
  • Contribute to the establishment and updating of www.ayen.net.
  • Contribute towards the development of the network.
  • Facilitate the communication between AYEN and other FK Youth participants.

This exchange will be under the umbrella of UNEP’S youth programme, TUNZA, and will be part of the work programme “Made By Youth For Youth”. All 15 FK participants are expected to use the time at the workshop in Norway to plan their activities in Africa for 3 months.

The outputs of this project will contribute to upcoming GRID-Arendal publications and to a new website to revive the Africa Youth Environment Network (AYEN).


Preferred qualifications:

  1.  Interest in the area of environmental management
  2. Competence in web and office technology
  3.  Proficiency in written and spoken English. French or Arabic is desirable but not necessary.
  4. Willing to work in a team of international people
  5. Willing to share knowledge with others, including through training sessions and workshop

Compensation:

 The selected participant will be provided with living allowance, housing allowance, insurance coverage, a set-up grant, and travel costs (to preparatory course, home country/host country, to and from work in host country). This is NOT A SALARY, but a set of allowances established in accordance with FK Norway rules and regulations.
UNEP/GRID-Arendal will act as the principal employer of the participant. The selected participants will be required to have a medical check-up as a condition to their employment.
