Barefoot Conservation is a new and exciting marine conservation and community awareness not-for profit NGO.Our focus is grass roots conservation and community action. Our aim is to engage, educate and empower the local community to make sustainable conservation a way of life, not just a project.

All of the Barefoot staff share the same passion for making a real difference at a grass root level on all our projects.

We are currently looking for a self motivated, energetic and enthusiastic "UK/Overseas Operations Intern", to help the Head of Operations run/manage the day-day operations of Barefoot Conservation NGO. Initially you would work from home, but there may be the possibility for a 1 month placement in our Bali Office.

Taking on the "UK/Overseas Operations Intern" role, will give you an amazing chance to cement your position in the NGO and advance to a full time paid position of UK/Overseas Operations Officer.

Primary Function

Assist the Head of Operations in the day-to-day running of Barefoot Conservation's UK & Overseas operations. Gain experience in the operation and administration of overseas marine conservation and community awareness projects. Work with an International conservation and community NGO, developing skills that could lead to a permanent position with Barefoot Conservation. Provide assistance in the recruiting of volunteers for expeditions and support the overseas operations teams.

General outline of the role

Assist the Head of Operations with the following:

  • Answer questions and general enquiries that come in on the telephone, email and through the website.
  • Send out any promotional literature, documentation and booking forms, to potential expedition volunteers.
  • Collate volunteer applications, medical/insurance documents, booking forms and internal reports from overseas projects.
  • Update the website content with news articles, new photos/images, travel advice and volunteers wall.
  • Liaise with all Barefoot Ambassadors, providing them with promotional materials and being second line support for volunteers questions they can not answer.
  • Develop positive relations with the relevant academics at your current or old university, to highlight to them, the benefits of endorsing students attending a Barefoot Conservation expedition.

Main duties & Responsibilities

  • Follow up call backs, brochure requests and enquiries with varied communications (phone calls, emails, newsletters).
  • Office logistics – File / prepare volunteer folders. Read and review emails. Sending out documentation and chasing volunteers for forms/payments.
  • Update on-line social media/networking sites, keeping them fresh with new and exciting articles/news of Barefoot Conservation's work.
  • Recruit Barefoot Ambassadors in Universities/colleges and schools, as well as returning expedition volunteers, to promote Barefoot Conservation.
  • Promote the organisation and its key objectives to the public and develop the Barefoot Conservation reputation and brand.
  • When necessary communicate with overseas projects, expedition team and country HQ's.
  • Help volunteers arrange flights to the expedition site and fill out Visa application forms.
  • Hold pre-departure briefings (phone or face-face) with volunteers who are joining an expedition, answering any final questions.
  • If necessary act as (out of hours) emergency contact for volunteers, family members and field staff.
  • Manage University, College, Schools and Dive Club mail outs.
  • If necessary chase possible leads using non-aggressive ethical techniques to demonstrate the advantages of joining an expedition from both a personal, academic and career point of view.
  • Any other task which the Head of Operations or Managing Director requests.

Terms & Conditions

Contract Duration:-    6 to 8 month contract, with possibility of permanent position at end of contract

Salary:-    Non Salaried position but commission on sales

Bonus:-    FREE 4 week expedition*

Accommodation:-    N/A

Travel:-    Travel allowance available**

Training:-    Free PADI scuba diving course's while on FREE 4 week expedition**

* Performance dependent. (Flights, Insurance and Visa not included).
