Description

UK Fisheries Outreach Officer - UKFOO

Introduction

MSC operates a global fisheries certification and ecolabelling program. We celebrate, promote and add value to sustainable fisheries and through the leadership of our partners, create market incentives to encourage other fisheries to improve the way they fish the oceans. Over 300 fisheries around the world, landing 12 % of the annual global harvest, are now engaged at some stage of the MSC’s independent assessment process. MSC certified and labelled seafood products are now available in over 100 countries.

Information on the role

The UK Fisheries Outreach Officer (UKFOO) will be responsible for implementing and delivering work on Project Inshore, contribute to delivering the MSC's overarching aims and objectives of various projects and provide support to the Fisheries Outreach Manager, UK & Ireland (FOM) to help deliver the Fisheries Outreach Programme in the UK. The UKFOO will work in collaboration with the other members of the outreach team to deliver a consistent approach to European fisheries and commercial outreach. Contributing to developing the MSC concept in the UK market and engaging fisheries in the UK market, developing domestic fishery projects where required.

The post will be responsible for outreach to UK fisheries with an initial focus on Project Inshore. The post holder will liaise closely with work going on elsewhere in the UK and Europe, work with national MSC focused external projects, promoting the MSC brand and increasing the support for the programme across a broad range of interest groups including; fisheries and supply chain stakeholders; government representatives; and partners in the NGO community. Project Inshore in England will initially take up the majority of the workload and outreach involves presentations, relationship building, explaining the MSC concept and certification programme, PI results to date and MSC’s fisheries in transition work to potential clients (fisheries or other organisation), working with fisheries as they look to implement Project Inshore findings and improvement projects and with supply chain partners.

The UKFOO will help deliver and feed into the continued development of the Fisheries Outreach Programme for the UK & Ireland including, work on fishery, species and area prioritisation, communications on the business case for certification and promotion of certified fisheries and product.  Where appropriate the UKFOO will feed into internal MSC policy development from an outreach perspective as well as UK Team Communications and Commercial colleague’s work.

Ultimately the post strives to build on current good practice, improve management of the UK fishing sector and increase the purchasing opportunities for consumers by achieving wider availability of certified products from the UK in Europe and beyond where demand for certified seafood is growing rapidly.

The idea candidate would have a post-graduate degree or equivalent experience in fisheries or marine conservation biology or environmental management; experience of working with the fisheries capture sector and and be able to demonstrate understanding of resource sustainability issues is a necessity; and demonstrated experience working with stakeholders and other external parties.  Previous work with the supply chain and MSC assessment process and/or an understanding of the role of eco-labeling an advantage.
