UK Commercial Manager

Introduction

The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is the world’s leading marine ecolabelling and certification program for wild fisheries. The organization's mission is to reverse the decline in global fish stocks, to deliver quantifiable improvements in marine conservation and thereby help to secure the livelihoods of those involved in the global fishing industry.  The MSC is recognized internationally as a groundbreaking and credible solution to the serious environmental problem of overfishing. 

Further Information

The UK Commercial Manager will be responsible for delivering a wide-ranging set of activities throughout the foodservice supply chain in England. The overarching aims are to increase the availability of MSC labelled fish dishes on menus in the UK foodservice sector and to increase the awareness of the MSC. This post will require a self-starter who is a versatile, capable and driven team player to fulfil expectations of this project.

The post holder will be required to fill a variety of roles, including:

-       Lead the recruitment and maintenance of excellent relationships with foodservice suppliers; distributors (B2B Foodservice); national contract caterers and restaurant chains, independent restaurants (B2C); UK fisheries; and other foodservice stakeholders including NGOs.

-       Work closely with the MSC’s Standards and Licencing teams to provide support to foodservice partners, ensuring effective implementation of the MSC’s traceability standard, Chain of Custody certification

-       Work with partners to encourage provision and communication of MSC certified seafood in the foodservice sector enabling the public to participate in achieving the MSC’s vision of oceans teeming with life and seafood supplies safeguarded for this and future generations.

-       Work closely with the UK Communications Manager, and the communications team to develop communications, PR and marketing support suitable for the foodservice sector, based on close consultation with the industry.

-       Playing an active part in the activities of the European commercial team and disseminating learning from this project throughout the MSC teams.

Skills and Experience Required

Essential Skills

-       Ability to lead and implement complex and inter-dependent projects at a national level.

-       Excellent verbal communication skills, especially the ability to convey complex ideas clearly and simply.

-       Good writing skills for a range of audiences.

-       Ability to prioritise a heavy workload and think creatively to solve problems under pressure.

-       Ability to combine a strategic but ‘hands-on’ approach.

-       Ability to work independently and be self-motivated.

-       Ability to build and maintain relationships at all levels, both internally and externally, and proven ability to work effectively within a team.

-       Excellent organisational and computer skills and strong attention to detail.

-       Ability to analyse information and report concisely.

-       Flexible approach to working.

-       Ability to research and synthesize information from various sources.

Essential Experience

-       Proven experience and proven track record in project management.

-       Minimum two years in a similar or transferrable role.

-       Proven experience of managing complex budgets and financial management.

-       Degree level or equivalent.

-       Line management experience.

-       Proven experience of building effective working relationships.

-       Commitment to the MSC’s mission and enthusiasm about contributing to MSC-wide responsibilities and development.

-       Commitment to MSC's policies on equal opportunities, environmental management, values, health and safety.

Desired Experience

-       Experience of working within the foodservice sector would be an advantage

-       Experience in development of consumer-facing materials.

-       Experience of managing external consultants

-       A good understanding of sustainable development, particularly if relating to fisheries, food or natural resource management.
