Maternity Cover

12 Months Part Time (3 days per week)

Salary range £34,849 - £36,723 pro rata, including London Weighting

Founded in 1826, theZoological Society of London (ZSL) is an international scientific, conservation and educational charity whose mission is to promote and achieve the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats. Our mission is realised through ground breaking science, our active conservation projects in more than 50 countries and our two zoos, ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo.

ZSL’s UK & Europe Conservation Programme seeks to bring direct and sustained conservation benefits to animals and their habitats focussing largely on the marine and freshwater environment.  ZSL is seeking a motivated individual to act as Programme Manager for 12 months as maternity cover.  The post-holder will be responsible for implementing the existing UK and Europe Conservation Programme strategy.  The work will include management of existing staff and projects and development of new projects from scoping work already done.  Fundraising to support both the existing and the new projects will be a priority, primarily working to a pre-existing plan but with some scope for new ideas.  Key areas of work in the UK are: - the Thames Estuary (fish conservation - smelt, European eel and sharks); seals; invasive non-native species; and native oysters.  In Europe, the focus is on: European wetlands; marine mammals; and angel sharks. The postholder will also be responsible for representing ZSL at technical and policy meetings, for overseeing programmatic and financial reporting to existing donors and partners, and for internal administration and communication.

The successful candidate will have had experience working in an applied aquatic science or aquatic conservation field.  They will be experienced in programme management and will have worked in the UK and Europe.  They will be up to date with current UK and European environmental policy and legislation.  In addition, they will be confident in producing technical reports, managing budgets, writing fundraising proposals, maintaining and developing good external and internal relations, and promoting the work of ZSL.

The post is part-time (3 days per week) and is maternity cover.  The contract is fixed term for 12 month and is based in London.  A job description is available from our website (www.zsl.org/jobs).
