2. Outline of the research project

The Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) supports approaches for sustainable development in Asia, as well as cross-cutting activities and research in cooperation with various international organisations.
In line with that, the IGES Kitakyushu Urban Centre (former IGES Kitakyushu Office) focuses on replication and dissemination of effective urban environmental policies and pragmatic approaches using its extensive inter-city network developed under the Kitakyushu Initiative Programme*1 toward improvement of urban environment and development of low-carbon society in Asia.

Main activities in the fiscal year 2010 include coordination with other donor agencies and international organisations to elaborate collaborative frameworks toward ESC as follow up activities of the 5th Kitakyushu Initiative Network Meeting held in February 2010 in Kitakyushu, Japan and the High Level Seminar on Environmentally Sustainable Cities (ESC) held in March 2010 in Jakarta, Indonesia under the framework of East Asia Summit Environment Ministers Meeting, for which IGES served as a secretariat.

*1The full name is “Kitakyushu Initiative for a Clean Environment”, which is one of the programmes of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN-ESCAP) supported by Kitakyushu City Government, Ministry of the Environment and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japan and IGES. The programme started in 2000 and closed in March 2010. More than 170 cities and municipalities in the region have participated in relevant events.


3. Work contents
Main works in the Kitakyushu Urban Centre include:
1) Development of proposals, conducting baseline research and studies for that, coordination with relevant organisations, organising relevant meetings and preparing relevant documents and meeting reports as follow up activities of the 5th Kitakyushu Initiative Network Meeting and the High Level Seminar on ESC;
2) Collection and compilation of relevant information on environmental policies and approaches in Asian countries and cities;
3) Supports for research studies and organising international seminars and conferences ;
4) Preparation of research and meetings reports; and
5) Any other relevant works of IGES.

4. Application condition and expected capacity
(1)
Academic background
- Masters Degree, or equivalent experiences, in environmental management, international cooperation, international environmental cooperation, or any other similar field.
(2)
Knowledge and experiences
- Extensive knowledge and experiences in environmental issues and practices in Asia.
- Academic experiences in environmental management and international cooperation.
- Experiences in evaluation and analysis of environmental issues in Asia.
- More than two years of working experiences in relevant fields.
(3)
Willingness and capacity
- High adaptability in above-mentioned working requirements.
- Experiences and high proficiency in research and publications in the relevant field.
- Capacity in working alone, as well as a team member.
- Capacity in working with various kinds of stakeholders, such as government and ministerial officers, NGOs, and research institutes.

Computer literacy
- Capacity in working on PCs and Office application software.
(5)
Language skill
- Capacity in communication and attending a meeting in Japanese. Reading, writing and communication skills in English.


5. Contract period
Contract starts from the date of commencement till 31 March 2011.
* This position is for yearly contract based on the regulations of IGES. Contract could be renewed depending on the performance and volume of work at that time.

Kitakyushu International Conference Centre, 6F, 3-9-30, Asano, Kokurakita-ku, Kitakyushu, Fukuoka
(moving to International Village Centre, 2F, 1-1-1, Hirano, Yahata-Higashi-Ku, Kitakyushu City, from late May 2010)


7. Working Conditions

Type of Employment: Full-time

Hours of work: 9:30-18:00

Holidays: Saturdays and Sundays, the end and the beginning of the year (29, 30, 31 of December and 2, 3 of January) and national holidays.

Annual vacation (paid leave) will be granted in accordance with the Labor Standard Law of Japan

Salary: Monthly salary system
Salary is determined by IGES regulations, taking into consideration the employee's research career, achievements, occupational history, expertise and experience.

Allowances: Allowances (overtime, commuting, housing, end-of-term, retirement) will be provided and travel expenses for relocation/return trips will be covered in accordance with the internal rule of IGES.
-
Insurance: Insurance (health, employee pension, unemployment and workers' accident compensation) will be partly covered by IGES.
