Vacancies for Trustees and Chair of Trustees with the International Tree Foundation, UK

We are currently looking for a Chair and up to 3 Trustees for the International Tree Foundation, based in Sussex with meetings in London.

Trustees/Board Members of NGOs are responsible for the overall strategic direction of the charity/enterprise and for making sure that it operates legally and safely and fulfils its purpose. Trustees are not paid any more than expenses and can expect to attend one or more meetings per quarter with all the attendant reading and preparation. Some Trustees take on extra duties such as sitting on sub-committees and from time-to-time may be involved in extra activities like assisting with the recruitment of senior staff, visiting programmes or mentoring key staff. It is a fascinating, responsible and absorbing role, but one that can grow into quite a heavy commitment it you let it.

The Chair of Trustees carries out all the duties of a Trustee but will also build and oversee the agenda of meetings, agree the minutes with the secretary, often manage and/or mentor the Director/CEO and pick up extra jobs at difficult times. S/he often also represents the organisation in public and private forums. In addition to their duties concering the governance of the charity, some Trustees are asked to offer advice and support to the Board and the Director on their areas of particular expertise. We are, therefore, espically interested in people with skills and knowledge in: international development; conservation; finance; fundraising; marketing and media.
