This is a Fixed Term Appointment for 2 years with the possibility of extension or permanency but no guarantee.

Appointments to the Forestry Commission are made at the entry level of the salary quoted above except in exceptional circumstances where a candidates’ experience and skills may justify a higher starting salary.

The successful candidate will be required to undertake a Basic Disclosure check in line with HMG Baseline Personnel Security Standard.

Please note that the anticipated start date will be 1st June 2015.


Background Information

Central Forest District has responsibility for the management of some 30,000ha of the Public Forest Estate within a triangle formed by Blackpool, Hull and Milton Keynes.

The Forest District produces 130,000 tonnes of timber each year, has a restock and underplanting programme that relies heavily on the effectiveness of the wildlife management team, supports many rare species and habitats, and contains some of the busiest public woodlands in the UK.

Purpose of the Job

Undertake a period of training with the deer management team in order to gain the knowledge and experience required to become a Wildlife Ranger.
Key Work Areas

All work must be carried out while complying fully with all health and safety requirements.

The ability to produce and apply risk assessments is essential at all times for all work tasks.

Manage pest numbers to allow Forestry Commission objectives to be met.

Carcasses will be prepared to the FC Wild Venison Standard. Use of the FC Wildlife Management System to record all deer cull data.

Train to advise and support Forest District staff with all wildlife control related matters, including restock design and tree species choice to aid reduction of deer damage, deer fencing.

Recognise tree damage and which causal agents are responsible whether that be deer, sheep, other herbivores, insects or tree diseases. Report findings to the appropriate member of staff.

Handle and use all firearms safely and effectively paying due regard to the Law and FC policy and instructions.

Learn to inspect fences both stock, rabbit and deer and prepare reports on their condition and possible repairs for the Wildlife Manager. Undertake minor fence repairs.

Acquire a working knowledge of the Forestry Commission and all of the operations it undertakes; learn to identify tree and common plant species.

Assist as required with deer and environmental surveys e.g. herbivore impact surveys, habitat monitoring, tree disease surveys and completion of OPS1’s.

At all times represent the Forestry Commission professionally and positively.

Assist the Wildlife Manager to: Monitor drag hunts, game shoots and deer control licences on Forestry Commission land.

Experience

Essential
Experience of working alone, outdoors in a range of weather conditions and during unsociable hours as the job dictates

Desirable
Experience of wildlife management, particularly deer

Experience of working in a forest environment

Professional and Technical Expertise

Essential
Willingness to work alone outdoors in a range of weather conditions and during unsociable hours as the job dictates

Holds a valid police firearms or shotgun certificate

Desirable
Holds Deer Stalking Certificate (DSC) 1

Holds or is working towards DSC2 or equivalent

The duties of this post require the applicant to have a full current driving licence that enables them to drive in the UK. However, the Forestry Commission is willing to consider any proposals put forward by applicants that would allow them to do the job by other means.
