Trade and investment campaigner

Full time position, based in Brussels, Belgium or Moreton in Marsh, UK

Are you a campaigner with a good understanding of how financial markets work and a grip on the functioning of global public and private institutions such as Export Credit Agencies (ECAs), the World Bank, hedge funds and the stock markets? If so, FERN, an international organisation working to achieve greater environmental and social justice, may be looking for you to help build its campaign on alternatives to the carbon economy. You would be an integral part of creating an NGO vision for how EU trade and investment can move from a negative to a positive force, with a focus on forests and forest peoples’ rights.  FERN is a non-hierarchical organisation ‘owned’ by all staff jointly, you would therefore be fully responsible for the running, well-being and quality of the whole organisation.

The ideal candidate will have some or all of the following competencies:

·         A good understanding of financial markets and how EU institutions function;·         Experience in developing, implementing and evaluating campaign plans, and of facilitation - especially of NGO networks;·         Excellent spoken and written English, plus another European language; ·         Excellent organisational and computer skills (Microsoft office);·         The ability to establish and maintain good working relationships at all levels within EU Institutions, FERN and the NGO movement;·         The ability to manage a workload and identify priorities and travel frequently between FERN’s offices and abroad.

The chosen candidate will:

·         Transform FERN’s existing campaign on ECA reform into a long term programme pushing for the EU to create an alternative to the carbon economy, for example by ending carbon trading and halting funding for fossil fuel extraction. Practically, this will mean:o        Developing close working relationships within the EU institutions and relevant NGOs active in Europe and in the South;o        Researching the role of various EU Directorate Generals;o        Facilitating and organising the information flow between European and Southern NGOs and relevant EU Institutions;o        Participating in and organising meetings/seminars with Commission officials and MEPs if and when required; o        Fundraising for trade and investment work and FERN core costs;o        Writing regular campaign updates and articles for, among others, FERN’s newsletter EU Forest Watch.·         Advise other campaigners how their campaign aims are affected by financial markets;·         Carry out general managerial and administrative tasks, shared between all staff;·         Manage the campaign budget in close co-operation with FERN’s financial officer.·         Manage the organisation as part of the management team.   HOW TO APPLY Send your CV and a letter explaining your motivation for the job including why you would like to work in a flat organisation to job@fern.org. All applications must be received by 1 December 2008.  RELEVANT INFORMATION

Yearly gross salary range is 36,000 to 49,000 Euro, depending on experience. Selected candidates will be invited for an interview and notified by 5 December 2008.The interview will take place on 10 December 2008 in our Brussels or UK office.
