Bird Studies Canada (BSC) is seeking 1 motivated and flexible biology assistant to work on our urban bird program in Toronto. The position is 3 to 4 months in duration, tentatively scheduled to begin May 2, 2016. The position is based out of the BSC Toronto office space at the Royal Ontario Museum, but events and other outreach work will take place around the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

DUTIES INCLUDE:

  1. Extensive urban field work, including: surveying for Chimney Swifts, Common Nighthawks, Eastern Screech-Owls, and conducting point counts for Toronto’s Summer Bird Survey.
  2. Entering and organizing data and maintaining databases.
  3. Conducting outreach in Southern Ontario (principally, the GTA) about wild birds through workshops, information booths, guided walks, and interactive displays.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong knowledge of southern Ontario birds (able to identify by both sight and sound) and their habitats
  • Solid understanding of bird sampling techniques, including experience conducting point counts
  • High level of organization and record keeping
  • Strong oral communication skills and experience with public speaking and/or interacting with the public
  • Able to work in a team
  • Valid driver’s license (access to a vehicle is an asset)
  • Valid First Aid certification (obtained before start date)
  • Comfortable working early mornings and independently

ASSETS:

  • Experience with GPS, compass, maps
  • Experience delivering stewardship and outreach programs
  • Data management
  • Working towards, or holding, a Bachelor’s degree in biology, education, environmental studies/science or a field related to the duties above
  • Meet Canada Summer Jobs requirements

SALARY: $2,300 – $2,500 (CDN) per month based on experience, plus legal benefits
