We are seeking a programming assistant to support community development food and urban agriculture projects at Evergreen Brick Works and across the GTA this summer.  Successful candidates must be under 30 years of age, full-time post secondary students in the previous academic year and returning to school in fall 2012, and legally entitled to work in Canada.  Priority will be given to applicants living in communities neighbouring Evergreen Brickworks including St James Town, Thorncliffe Park, Flemingdon Park, Regent Park, O’Connor etc.

Reporting to members of the Community Development team, you will:
• Assist staff in delivering on-going gardening,  healthy nutrition,  and active recreation programs;
• Assist in outreach for food-based initiatives with a focus on underserved communities across the GTA, including support for the development of a neighborhood engagement committee
• Assist with development of outreach materials, and facilitation of meetings and site tours that introduce Evergreen Brick Works to our surrounding communities;
• Participate in planning and coordination of community events and projects (i.e. harvest festivals, community potlucks, garden groups, public greening events);
• Assist in facilitating public events, plantings and workshops, including:
o Assisting with set-up, clean-up, and smooth delivery of programming and evaluation;
o Educating the public in topics including food growing, native plant stewardship, active transportation
You have:
• Interest, education and experience in food/native plant gardening, health and nutrition and/or recreational programming
• A passion for social justice and environmental sustainability
• Experience with community-based outreach initiatives
• Enthusiasm for working outdoors in all kinds of weather, working with your hands, occasionally lifting heavy objects, and getting dirty
• An ability to guide children, youth, and diverse members of the public in group activities and discussions
• Comfort working with individuals of different ages, cultures, backgrounds, and abilities
• Excellent communication skills
• A flexible schedule, including the ability to work some evenings and weekends
