Directory Entry : Founded in 1967 as the Environmental Defense Fund, we tackle the most serious environmental problem...a scrappy group of scientists and a lawyer on Long Island, New York, fighting to save osprey from the toxic pesticide DDT. Using scientific evidence, our founders got DDT banned nationwide. Today, we’re one of the world's leading environmental organizations. In the U.S., Fortune magazine called our board one of the country's most influential nonprofit boards. You can see the jobs of the EDF on their website.

With world attention focused on both the environment and the economy, Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) is where policymakers and business leaders turn for win-win solutions. This leading green group, with programs from Boston to Beijing, has tripled in size over the past decade by focusing on strong science, uncommon partnerships and market-based approaches. You can be part of a vibrant workplace that welcomes diverse perspectives, talents and contributions, where innovation and a focus on results are a way of life.

The Tom Graff Diversity Fellowship Program at EDF is looking for diverse candidates to evaluate the socio-economic benefits and policy impacts of our low-carbon rural development projects in India. The fellowship is a full-time, one-year position focused on EDF’s work to facilitate large-scale implementation of low-carbon farming methods, afforestation, bio gas and efficient cookstoves projects in rural India.

Overall Function
EDF is working both domestically and internationally to promote low-carbon farming, with a focus on generating quantifiable GHG emission reductions through improved fertilizer and water level management. In partnership with members of the Fair Climate Network, the coalition of organizations implementing this work in India, EDF is working to reduce the impact of anthropogenic activities on our planet’s climate while improving the welfare of small, low-income farming communities using low-carbon rural development initiatives.

Key Responsibilities
The Tom Graff Fellow will conduct work on EDF’s low-carbon development projects that may include:

  • Analyzing datasets that will include greenhouse gas emission measurements, demographic data from farmer diaries, GPS readings from demarcation of agricultural plots, and water, fertilizer, and biogas use data
  • Using these datasets to develop socio-economic and policy indicators
  • Evaluating current incentives-based approaches for delivering environmental and socioeconomic benefits, and developing new incentive models for scaling projects

The fellow may attend meetings and workshops pertaining to GHG offset methodologies, food and water security, infrastructure and energy policies; and visit field sites in India, if necessary.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree required, Ph.D. preferred, in economics or other social sciences, engineering, or environmental studies, with relevant economic or scientific training and experience
  • A passion for environmental protection, a commitment to rigorous analysis, creativity (and a dose of pragmatism) in the real-world application of scientific theory, and knowledge of relevant environmental policy issues
  • Excellent research, writing, communication, and problem solving skills, with the ability to communicate complex ideas to a general audience
  • Demonstrated interest in rural development
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite of software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and geospatial analysis tools such as ArcGIS

Term:  This is a one-year term position.
Salary:  $45,000 plus full benefits package

Due to the volume of employment applications and queries received, EDF is unable to respond to each application individually. Applicants will be contacted directly if selected as a candidate.
