Common heritage of mankind, also termed as the common heritage of humanity or common heritage of humankind, is a concept of international law which holds that defined  areas and elements of humanity's common heritage (cultural and natural) should be held in trust for future generations and be protected from exploitation by individual nation States or Corporations.

Applications are called for from interested candidates for conducting of research on the topic ‘The Oceans and the concept of the Common Heritage of Mankind'. The research must encompass the following areas:

1. The background to the concept of common heritage of mankind and the Deep Seabed

2. Customary Law: Declaration of Principles Governing the Deep Seabed

3. The Legal Regime Governing the Deep Seabed- Part XI of the UNCLOS, Resolutions I and II to the Final Act of the UNCLOS and the 1994 Agreement relating to the Implementation of Part XI of the UNCLOS and

4. The Machinery: The International Seabed Authority (ISBA)

The research should be of minimum of 15,000 words and be completed within a period of three months. The candidates selected will be granted 5000 Euros each for the purpose of conducting this research. The fellowships will be administered by the IMO International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI), in Malta. The application must be accompanied by the following documents:

1. A letter of intent written by the candidate stating the candidate's reasons for applying for this fellowship, his/her career objectives and how the said research will be beneficial to them in their future careers.

2. Two letters of reference covering the candidate's ability to undertake this fellowship. Referees should be persons who are not related to the candidate and who are familiar with the candidate's character and qualifications.
