This is a temporary position to fill in for an employee on maternity leave; the position is available immediately through mid-November, 2011.

The Project Manager will be responsible for managing park development and renovation projects within the Parks for People—Bay Area Program. The Project Manager will work with urban communities, schools, local agencies and vendors to restore, construct and maintain capital improvements for parks, gardens and school grounds. This individual will be responsible for managing park and playground renovation projects throughout the San Francisco Bay Area from community outreach through construction document production, bidding and construction. This work includes managing consultants and assisting TPL staff on other projects and fundraising efforts as needed.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 Manage park restoration and revitalization projects in close coordination with the Program Director, Project Manager, and Project Associates. This management of capital improvement projects may include:

  • Conceptual design development;
  • Vendor selection and management (including contracting of landscape designers and construction professionals);
  • Selecting and purchasing play equipment and other amenities for each project;
  • Community engagement;
  • Contract negotiations with city and other local agencies and vendors;
  • Design and planning coordination with city agencies and community groups 
  • Construction administration
  • Assist program staff in identifying new projects and partnership opportunities.
  • Administrative tasks will include adherence to contractual project obligations, including associated reporting requirements and general program support.

EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • A degree in Landscape Architecture from an accredited university; licensure a plus
  • 5-10 years experience that includes project management in urban community park planning and construction
  • Excellent oral, written and graphic communication skills
  • Experience in hiring and managing consultants to design urban park improvements
  • Construction management/administration/observation/coordination
  • Experience working for or with community based organizations and public agencies
  • Ability to manage complex projects from start to finish with moderate level of supervision
  • Must have the ability to determine procedures on new assignments and provide guidance to others
  • Demonstrated ability to function well as a team member
  • High degree of creativity, vision, and resourcefulness
  • An awareness and understanding of environmental justice issues in low-income, urban communities
  • Ability to collaborate and negotiate with diverse groups and interests in dynamic inner-city environments
  • Budgeting and time management skills
  • Ability to train and mentor other project staff

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Computer proficiency:  AutoCAD, Adobe CS and Microsoft Office; SketchUp a plus · Fundraising and marketing skills a plus
  • Non-profit experience desirable
