The Organizer will work with the US Tar Sands campaign to recruit support and build turnout in the US for the International Day of Action (IDA) Against Canada’s Tar Sands, scheduled for June 16, 2011. This position is responsible for nurturing and growing the grassroots network for the IDA; recruiting, training and coordinating new activists; and supporting the ForestEthics corporate campaign against Canada’s Tar Sands. Through hands-on organizing work, the organizer will engage grassroots supporters and mobilize them into actions and events related to the IDA that will ultimately focus on one corporate target selected by ForestEthics.  This position reports to the US Campaigns Director. 

This is a full-time, temporary position that terminates no later than July 16, 2011. Position is based in Bellingham, Washington or San Francisco, California.  No relocation expenses will be provided.  Selected candidate will be compensated at a rate of $25/hr. 

Responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  • Recruitment, training and grassroots leadership development for IDA activist involvement
  • Identify and wWork with existing networks  for IDA to support turnout
  • Work with the online organizer to develop compelling online actions, social media messages, and email blasts
  • Assist in the creation of campaign materials such as factsheets, postcards and activist toolkits
  • Create compelling report backs of field activities including: high-quality photos, high-quality video, direct stories from activists in the field, and assist in the creation of blogs and social media campaigns to promote these results
  • Assist recruited volunteers with logistics of IDA events around the country

Qualifications:

  • 3-5 year organizing experience, with experience in corporate campaigns strongly preferred
  • Experience organizing a large-scale, coordinated Day of Action strongly preferred
  • Independent, self-motivated with a desire to advance the work of ForestEthics
  • Enthusiasm and passion for campaign organizing
  • Demonstrated success managing volunteers, identifying organizational needs, and problem solving with minimal supervision
  • Highly organized, flexible, creative, able to prioritize multiple tasks, and able to thrive in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment
  • Knowledge of SalesForce (or similar relationship management database) a plus
  • Excellent project management, follow-through, and time management skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to travel frequently if required

Physical Demands / Work Environment:

  • Clear vision at 25 inches or less to view computer screen and read documents
  • Must be able to sit at desk and work on a computer for 5-7 hours/day
  • Must be able to lift 20 pounds
  • Must be able to climb stairs to reach office
  • Working conditions typical of an office environment
  • Exposure to moderate levels of noise such as computers, printers, light traffic
  • Able to travel
