Temporary IT Project Manager

Introduction

The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is the world’s leading marine ecolabelling and certification program for wild fisheries. The organization's mission is to reverse the decline in global fish stocks, to deliver quantifiable improvements in marine conservation and thereby help to secure the livelihoods of those involved in the global fishing industry.  The MSC is recognized internationally as a groundbreaking and credible solution to the serious environmental problem of overfishing.

Reporting to the IT Director, the IT Project Manager will lead internal and outsourced IT projects, including the management of related business activities, to deliver projects on time, within budget and to the specified quality, that are capable of meeting desired business objectives and maximising business benefit.   They will help the IT Programme Manager to assess impacts of proposed IT projects on  internal IT systems for the MSC (and clients, as appropriate), including e.g. usability, integration solutions and costs, hosting options, data security, etc.

The IT Project Manager will establish a Project Management Office with the support of the IT Director, establishing project management and delivery practices, and advising on IT project delivery.  They will provide leadership and support to project teams delivering IT projects, and specifically, they will be fully and actively involved in delivery of the MSC’s SharePoint development. 

The post holder will also manage IT project budgets, monitoring and reporting expenditure and costs against delivered and realised benefits, and manage effectively all resources allocated to IT projects within the MSC.  They will also serve as the day-to-day contact for IT contractors developing MSC-led IT solutions, including coordinating progress meetings, status calls, and key development  milestones.

They will be expected to work in a very dynamic environment where both requirements and project priorities change rapidly.  To be successful, they must have a strong and evident commitment to customer service and team work.  The role will require a creative, thorough and strategic approach.

Skills and Experience Required

Technical Knowledge and Experience

  • Demonstrated high level of experience of on-time, on-budget and to-specification delivery of programme and project management, including delivery, risk management and evaluation.
  • Experience of technical project management, managing major implementations and upgrades of IT hardware and software.
  • Strong track record of on-time, on-budget and to-specification delivery of projects.
  • Experience of project management methodologies and tools.
  • Good understanding of and experience in change management processes and tools, including business and financial awareness of the impact of changes, and how to manage these.
  • Demonstrated experience in financial management, including financial and cost-modelling development and monitoring expenditure for a diverse range of projects.
  • Ability to make decisions in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Demonstrated relevant business and technology experience at an appropriate level.
  • Experience of change management within IT services, including successful project management.
  • Proven ability to analyse issues and problems and provide solutions to these.
  • Excellent working knowledge of MS products, including SharePoint.
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent; Prince 2 certification or relevant professional qualification desirable.

Relationship Management

  • Evidence of ability to successfully manage relationships with colleagues, stakeholders, suppliers and collaborators, with a people-centred approach to business and work essential. 
  • Strong focus on delivery of excellent customer services (including expectation management).
  • Demonstrated cultural awareness and sensitivity to the diversity of values, views and approaches to issues relevant to the MSC, its staff and its work.
