Job/Research Summary NREL is seeking a Section Manager to lead the Technical Evaluation Section within the Technical Assessment and Screening Group, Integrated Applications Center (IAC), Deployment and Market Transformation (D&MT) organization. The Center focuses on projects that involve the integrated deployment of a portfolio of renewable energy and efficiency technologies in buildings, transportation and infrastructure to meet the needs of Federal managers, international, state and local communities and governments, military bases, and campuses.

This position is a hands-on first-line supervisor and individual contributor. The Section Manager portion of this position is expected to account for 25% of the individual’s time. The balance of the Section Manager’s time shall be to lead and/or contribute to technical work in support of the goals of the Section, Group, and Center.

As a section manager (~25% time), the individual will lead a section of 6-8 engineers that evaluate emerging new energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies. This individual will develop and implement a strategic vision for validating new technologies, increasing deployment of successful technologies, and growing funding for technology validation work at NREL. This individual will also mentor staff, support their career growth, and participate in management responsibilities such as staff planning and performance feedback. 

As an individual contributor (~75% time), the incumbent will provide engineering support to projects related to the deployment of energy efficiency and renewable energy strategies for IAC DOE and non-DOE clients. Work may include leading or contributing to new technology demonstration projects, energy efficiency and renewable energy assessments, EE/RE trainings, or EE/RE software tool development.
Job Duties Key duties of this position include: 
• Develop strategic vision for technology validation programs in the Center
• Work with Lab Program Managers, Key Account Managers, and business development leads to strategically position the section to grow in terms of funding and expertise
• Perform resource planning, including managing staff assignments to meet the needs of clients and projecting funding and skillset requirements
• Provide support and encouragement to staff and support their career development. Mentor staff in NREL’s processes, procedures, and culture of outstanding work. Help staff to access resources throughout the lab
• Review staff work products to ensure high standards of quality
• Lead annual performance reviews
• Meet regularly with the Group Manager and other managers for coordination and planning
• Serve as a liaison with other sections and groups at NREL, and internal and external clients. 
• Lead or support complex IAC engineering projects including energy efficiency and renewable energy assessments, EE/RE tool development, and new technology demonstrations, to advance deployment of EE/RE technologies
• Serve as a technical resource and subject matter expert for section
Required Education and Experience Previous management and budget adherence experience may be required. Degree in appropriate field may also be required.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Attributes Demonstrated knowledge of legal and ethical management issues and practices. In-depth knowledge of the issues and best practices in the applicable field of expertise. Generally viewed as subject matter expert for group or work units.

Excellent organization, project management, budgeting, interpersonal and communication skills. Proven problem-solving and negotiation skills. Demonstrated ability to make appropriate decisions regarding work activities and projects. Demonstrated ability to effectively lead and direct personnel with diverse skills, work styles and values.
Additional Required Knowledge, Skills and Attributes • Experience in project/team leadership or management. 
• Knowledge of best practices and challenges within the field of new technology validation, especially as it applies to energy efficiency and renewable energy projects, with expertise in some specific aspect of this discipline
• Depth of understanding in one or more renewable energy or energy efficiency technologies and breath of understanding in the majority of renewable and efficiency technologies. 
• High standards of work quality
