Description |
The Rainforest Alliance (RA) is an international nonprofit organization that works to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behavior. Based in New York City, with offices throughout the United States and worldwide, the Rainforest Alliance works with people whose livelihoods depend on the land, helping them transform the way they grow food, harvest wood and host travelers. The Sustainable Agriculture Division of the Rainforest Alliance is the international secretariat of the Sustainable Agriculture Network (SAN), a coalition of independent Latin American conservation and rural development groups which promote sustainable agriculture as an alternative for development and conservation of the major commodity crops (bananas, coffee cocoa, citrus, flowers) that have widespread and profound influence on the economies, environments, cultures and politics of tropical countries. RA and SAN manage a regional program to guide, motivate and verify social and environmental improvements on farms, awarding a seal of approval (Rainforest Alliance Certified) to farms that meet comprehensive standards. Project Summary The Nicaragua Agriculture, Forestry and Tourism Alliance (NIFATA) will promote sales of certified products in the timber, coffee and tourism sectors and provide a stream of economic, social and conservation benefits to producers, workers and their families in Nicaragua. Through a set of cross-sectional marketing activities, the Alliance will strengthen the competitiveness and sustainability of agriculture, forestry and tourism operations and improve their access to international markets. This is a three-year program. Position Summary The Technical Associate will be responsible for supporting RA’s Sustainable Agriculture Division regarding training and technical support activities for the Project. S/he will oversee event logistics and evaluate training and technical support needs. S/he will also help assess the progress of farms and producers by conducting field visits.
