Cutting edge communications has been at the beating heart of Greenpeace for 40 years. While much has changed about how we communicate, the need to tell compelling stories in defence of the planet has not. Greenpeace International is looking for a team leader for its five-person, high-speed news output team in Amsterdam. We need someone with a passion for news, a drive for accuracy, a solid understanding of the international media environment, experience with digital media channels and an excitement for learning. We operate in a 24/7, 365-day-a-year, instant-communication landscape where good judgment and strong instincts mean quick communications and a seat at the decision-making table. We coordinate global communications for offices in more than 40 countries, and connecting with colleagues around the world is key. Working with the Head of Output, the News Outreach Team Leader will maintain an overview of key external landscape and communication developments and based on this deliver fast and effective editorial output based upon differentiated target audiences, for both reactive and proactive communication.
 

Purpose of the job

To lead, co-ordinate and deliver media relations output to ensure speed, consistency, integrity and effectiveness of Greenpeace editorial output across all (converged) platforms globally in line with Greenpeace organisational and campaign objectives and within the budget in order to ensure effective output that contributes to achieving campaign and organisation objectives.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead the international media / news outreach plan and maintain an overview of key external landscape and communication developments and based on this deliver fast and effective editorial output, in cooperation with the Head of Output, Campaign Communication Managers and Team Leader for Digital Mobilisation in order to ensure that editorial decisions are of a consistently high standard and output is based upon differentiated target audiences drawn from campaign communication strategies that engage and inspire
  • Lead, manage, and assign resources for converged news delivery and reactive communication by operating in a fast moving and changing environment, including onboard Greenpeace ships, on location of actions and political meetings and working across interconnected global communications in order to achieve the overall Greenpeace communications strategy
  • Lead, initiate, develop and oversee the strategic editorial input and implementation of innovative, creative, pro-active and reactive communication news release plans that provide a consistent editorial message across all platforms in order to push our targets to act and to ensure victory for our campaigns through audience centered-thinking and understanding of transmedia delivery
  • In conjunction with the Head of Output, lead and coordinate GPI and global communications response to external events or incidents that offer opportunities for the organisation and/or reputational threats to the organization
  • Set up, organise, manage, and develop media relations staff in a qualitative and quantitative manner, in compliance with national law and regulations and in line with HR and GPI guidelines, in order to be equipped for current and future challenges
  • Develop, monitor and authorize expenditure of news output budgets according to agreed objectives and priorities to ensure cost effectiveness and strategic expenditure of the allocated budget
  • Maintain overview and coordinate the development of external international networks with key media contacts across all platforms in order to enable maximum influence in external world to support achievement of communication strategies and objectives
  • In conjunction with the research team monitor and analyse relevant converged media coverage to test the effectiveness and effective targeting of messaging within key target audiences and values based. communications

Skills and qualifications

  • Bachelors/masters degree in a related subject
  • At least 7 years professional news experience
  • Proven editorial track record in press, video, web, PR
  • Experience in working in other countries than native
  • Management experience including remote and financial management
  • Excellent written and spoken English, one more language desirable and/or willingness to pick up
  • International travel is essential
  • Flexibility regarding working hours and on-call work.
