Description

We are looking to recruit a conscientious Environmental Manager with experience of UK environmental legislation and Habitats Regulation Assessments to join the Energy Infrastructure Planning Team in BEIS. We are a friendly and professional team and we truly believe our work touches on some of the most exciting issues in the environmental arena!

We really believe that this is an outstanding opportunity for an enthusiastic environmental manager. We want you to use your environmental assessment skills and experience to provide advice for decisions on nationally significant infrastructure projects. It's also an excellent chance to demonstrate your leadership skills.

You will lead three other environmental managers in the team. Working together, you will provide advice to Ministers and officials on the environmental effects of offshore and onshore energy development applications. You will also be asked to provide expert input into policy decisions. You'll also be encouraged to develop your specialist knowledge. And as part of our leadership team, you’ll play a key role in making sure we meet our objectives by helping Ministers to make timely decisions on planning applications.

We believe this role provides an excellent opportunity to influence decision making in energy infrastructure planning. You will also collaborate closely with key partners, including developers, statutory advisors on nature conservation and nongovernment organisations to ensure that proposed developments are environmentally acceptable and that appropriate mitigation is included in consent conditions.

We believe that this is a truly exciting opportunity where you can make a difference to the future of the environment.

Job description

  • You will lead a team made up of three other environmental managers. You will help them set their objectives and help them to deliver those objectives. You will also be part of the leadership team of the section. You will provide advice on resourcing and other wider team matters including business planning.
  • You will support your team members as they write Habitat Regulations Assessments for nationally significant energy infrastructure projects.
  • You will help them assess complex, technical and often conflicting environmental information to advise on the nature and level of environmental risk associated with consenting energy infrastructure applications.
  • You will provide advice to tight statutory deadlines on environmental impacts of all types of nationally significant energy infrastructure and fulfilling statutory obligations under the Birds and Habitats Directive by undertaking legally robust Habitats Regulations Assessments.
  • Ideally you’ll have experience of leading project teams and delivering successful outcomes.
  • We want someone who would be comfortable advising Ministers and senior officials. You'll also work collaboratively with developers and other organisations to find solutions to challenging environmental issues.

Responsibilities

We are looking for someone with a relevant environmental undergraduate qualification preferably with good experience writing or responding to Habitats Regulations Assessments and Environmental Impact Assessments.

An environmental post graduate qualification is desirable.

The successful candidate will be able to make effective decisions, communicate and influence, manage a quality service and show all round leadership.
