Full-time (40 hour week) Tuesday through Saturday




Job Description:  The teacher naturalist has duties primarily in the education branch of the NJ Audubon mission and provides natural science programs to schools, interested groups and the general public.  The teacher naturalist, under the direction of the sanctuary director and program coordinator (if applicable), takes part in all aspects of programming and operating a nature center.  The teacher-naturalist takes an active role in promoting New Jersey Audubon as a membership-based conservation organization.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Educational Programming and Visitor Services

  • Plan, develop, schedule, and conduct natural history programs for schools, special interest groups, nature camps, the general public, and family programs.
  • Maintain lesson plans, educational materials and all other related programming information.
  • Oversee and conduct administrative duties as needed including program registration and sending follow-up materials
  • Interact with visitors to the center through answering inquiries about the natural world and NJ Audubon
  • Assist with the design and maintenance of interpretive exhibits,  brochures and other center-specific materials
  • Assist in the Center Nature Store and its operation as needed
  • Coordinate the care, feeding, and well being of live animals that are presented for educational purposes. 

 

Membership

  • ·         Strive to increase NJ Audubon membership base

 

Community Relations  

  • ·         Represent the NJ Audubon in the local community, expanding the organization’s presence to increase local awareness, support and participation.
  • ·         Develop and disseminate appropriate promotional materials related to center programs and events

 

Volunteer Program

  • Assist with the training and supervision of volunteer staff involved in education or public interface.

 

Facilities / Property

  • ·         Assist with care and maintenance of the grounds, gardens, and trail system as needed. 

 

Other

  • ·         Prepare written reports, proposals and plans as required.
  • ·         Attend center, department and NJ Audubon meetings and serve on committees as requested by supervisor.
  • ·         Obtain and maintain certification for First Aid, CPR, and other public safety certification appropriate for the activities at the site.
  • ·         Assume additional responsibilities as requested.

 

Knowledge and Skills

  • ·         Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to accept direction and constructive criticism.
  • ·         Motivated self-starter who is also a team player
  • ·         Punctual with effective time management skills.
  • ·         Excellent oral and written skills required.
  • ·         Ability to demonstrate initiative and a positive attitude.
  • ·         Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office) to fulfill the job requirements.
  • ·         Ability to relate to a diverse range of people and exercise cultural competence and inclusion.

 

Qualifications

  • B.A. or B.S. in the sciences or education, preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of natural history of NJ
  • At least two years experience teaching in a nature center setting.
  • Flexibility to adjust hours to meet special needs of the Sanctuary and the organization.

Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to operate a vehicle in NJ; have the physical capacity to walk throughout the land and buildings of the sanctuary, able to move materials and to lift 50 lbs and operate mechanical equipment as needed.

 

Starting Date:  Immediate

 

Salary:  Commensurate with experience.
