The Sycan Marsh Stewardship Assistant is a member of a team that performs and participates in preserve operations, maintenance and management at our Sycan Marsh Preserve. This position requires living on the preserve in housing provided by the Conservancy.
 

 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
 

The Sycan Marsh Stewardship Assistant maintains preserve facilities and performs land management activities.  S/he removes exotic species and conducts species monitoring.  S/he may assist in prescribed burns, fence repair, and maintain tools, equipment and land.  The Sycan Marsh Stewardship Assistant will maintain preserve records using a database or PC. 
 

 
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
 
  • Supervises no staff, but may help plan and direct volunteer work groups.    
  • Requires considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain.  
  • Requires long hours in isolated settings.            
  • Makes day to day decisions as delegated by supervisor.     
  • May work under infrequent supervision.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT

  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
 
  • High school diploma and 1 year’s training in science-related field or related experience in land management.
  • Experience recognizing plant and animal species.       
  • Experience operating various types of equipment.                       
  • Experience working in a team environment.                                           
  • Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g. First Aid, CPR, herbicide application, and driver’s license).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • BA/BS in science-related field or equivalent experience in land management.      
  • Experience working with ArcGIS, Microsoft Office, and other computer programs                                                             
  • Experience applying herbicides in a safe and effective manner
  • Ability to operate various types of equipment.  (e.g.; ATV, chainsaw, tractor, two-way radio, etc.).                   
  • Experience with data collection and scientific report writing

This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with the Conservancy's Auto Safety Program. Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers." Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.
