The SW Wyoming Program Director directs the Conservancy’s efforts in southwest Wyoming, furthering the Conservancy’s strategic goals of conserving lands and waters within SW Wyoming.  A primary focus will be on sustainability of the water resources in three watersheds: Upper Green, Little Snake, and Bear River. Building on and working cooperatively with ongoing efforts in these watersheds, the position will 1) increase awareness about water management challenges, 2) develop and implement strategies and tools to address these challenges, and 3) build capacity and support for improvements in water management. S/he serves as the principle contact to media, government officials, conservation organizations, and others whose actions may influence program outcomes.  Coordinates activities with State Office in Lander, WY. This position will be supervised by the Associate State Director and will supervise no other employees.  Location to be determined within SW Wyoming (includes Fremont County). Specific functions to include:

  • Identify water management challenges and potential solutions in three focal watersheds.
  • Develop, enhance and coordinate the Conservancy’s partnerships and conservation efforts in the Upper Green River, Smiths Fork, Flaming Gorge, Blacks Fork-Hams Fork, and the Little Snake.
  • Further the Conservancy’s strategic goals and Conservation Action Planning through internal coordination and regular interaction with Science Team and TNC’s Colorado River team.
  • Advance water-related efforts of Upper Green ecosystem services collaborative, ideally as a case model for other downstream Colorado River areas.
  • Build coalitions to garner resources and community support to address threats to the Upper Green, Bear and Little Snake watersheds.
  • Identify key stakeholders and develop and implement strategies to achieve goals.
  • Develop and review detailed, complex land transaction documents and contracts.
  • Employ a full range of protection tools to acquire varying degrees of legal interest in land to include: negotiating with landowners and land managers, drafting conservation easement documentation and terms, securing grant and other funding for projects and other duties related to land transactions.
  • Generate community support for conservation action and effectively raise funds.
  • Develop and implement grants, coop agreements, MOUs and other partner agreements with agencies, non-profits and foundations including assisting with administrative, accounting, grants and contract-related and record-keeping duties as needed.
  • Promote land stewardship and habitat restoration with private landowners and in close coordination with local Conservation Districts, Wyoming Game and Fish Department, BLM, U.S. Forest Service and State Lands.
  • Develop, coordinate or assist with outreach projects and public education events including interpretive outings, fundraising events, donor cultivation, farm and ranch tours and other special events as needed.
  • Build and Coordinate a SW Wyoming Program Advisory Board.
  • Establishes the Conservancy as a major conservation partner within the area of responsibility
  • Defines conservation priorities in the area of responsibility
  • Develops key partnerships with public and private organizations in order to identify and resolve technical issues and to widely communicate solutions and best practices
  • Engages local community support for local conservation efforts
  • Negotiates complex and innovative solutions with government agencies and landowners to conserve and protect natural communities
  • Develops and implements conservation strategies
