Founded in 1951, the mission of The Nature Conservancy is to preserve the plants, animals and natural communities that represent the diversity of life on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive. | | ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS | | The SW Alaska Conservation Manager develops, manages and advances conservation programs, plans and methods for larger-scale ecoregions. The SW Alaska Conservation Manager provides technical leadership and support to the region or division. Requires sufficient knowledge and work experience in conservation in addition to one or more of the following functions: • Develops and implements conservation strategies • Knowledge of politics and society with respect to environmental affairs • Employs a full range of conservation tools to implement a variety of strategies to secure public and private support for TNC conservation priorities. • Coordinates community support • Work from a knowledge base of direct experience in the sport, subsistence, or commercial fisheries industry • Effectively lead teams of staff, contractors, trustees and other stakeholders to develop and carry out strategies around salmon conservation in SW Alaska • Direct and drive support for pro-salmon conservation management within SW Alaska. • Direct and drive the strategic use of science with regulators, conservation groups, scientists, resource groups, and industry. • Work with the conservation and resource coalitions to fully exploit opportunities the science based approach will offer to achieve conservation based outcomes. • Meet with key constituent groups to share science findings that support for pro-salmon management. • Synthesize science work to inform conservation strategies for the region • Work with science teams to coordinate work for field seasons • Serve as science spokesperson for Conservancy’s science program • Lead and assemble teams of experts to critically evaluate and utilize risk assessment, scientific, and economic data • Create and manage a public forum for science-based salmon conservation issues in SW Alaska • Synthesize science work to lay the public knowledge foundation to establish statutory, regulatory or policy standards that could inform new conservation designations; water quality regulations, and state and federal land management approaches • Work with conservation and other stakeholders to develop recommendations on salmon conservation and development issues. • Assist with salmon habitat assessments on Native corporation lands.
As part of the incumbent’s ongoing professional development, he/she will be responsible for keeping abreast of new developments to enhance skills and maintain/grow professional conservation credentials. In addition, they shall work to build and maintain relationships in the conservation and industry groups and local communities. | | BASIC QUALIFICATIONS | | • BA/BS, natural resource, environmental science, law or business degree and 5 years experience in natural resource management, policy, or law or equivalent combination of education and experience. • Experience negotiating complex agreements. • Experience communicating with the public and/or media both in writing and verbally. • Experience using common software applications such as Word, Excel, Web browsers, etc. | | ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION | | WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT: The Conservation Practitioner V may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances. These conditions: • require occasional physical exertion and/or muscular strain • present occasional possibility of injury • require long hours in isolated settings
