Sustainable Transport Officer
  • Salary / rate of pay: Starting salary of £21,000 - £24,000 (within a range of £21,000 -£30,000)
  • Location: Midhurst, with travel throughout the South Downs National Park
  • Job Type: Fixed Term Contract – to March 2015
  • Hours: Full time role – 37 hours per week. Job sharers will be considered.

The South Downs National Park Authority is a new, exciting organisation that aims to look after the National Park and helps people to learn about and enjoy the area.  We also have an important role to support the local communities that live and work here. 

The Authority became fully operational on 1 April 2011 and we are looking for talented individuals to take this important work forward.  We are committed to creating a modern, flexible organisation that works through partnership and supports local action

We are looking for two Sustainable Transport Officers to drive forward the delivery of the South Downs elements of the ‘Two National Parks’ LSTF Programme. The roles will be hosted in, and focus on, the South Downs National Park, but will include joint working with the New Forest National Park Authority where appropriate.

These are diverse and exciting roles, helping to deliver large scale travel behaviour change through innovative sustainable transport projects and marketing campaigns.

Working with and through tourism businesses, transport operators, destination management organisations and the voluntary sector, these posts will lead on the delivery of a range of initiatives, including a network of visitor travel plans, cycling initiatives and the development of routes for walkers and cyclists.   

Ideally, the successful candidate will be educated to University degree or equivalent level in a related field e.g. transport planning, marketing, tourism and have a qualification / accredited training in project management.   It is essential that they have the following, skills, experience and ability:

  • Experience of developing, delivering and monitoring projects, using a range of project management methods and tools.
  • Demonstrable interest in and commitment to Sustainable Travel.
  • Excellent project management skills and abilities.
  • Ability to produce high quality reports to deadlines.
  • Ability to organise effectively and prioritise own workload in order to meet competing deadlines.
  • Excellent IT skills including high level of competence in Word, Excel, and the internet.
  • Ability to deal with project partners and other stakeholders sensitively and appropriately to their diverse needs.
  • Ability to communicate confidently and effectively at all levels and with a wide range of individuals and organisations (including good presentation skills).
  • Ability to work independently within broad guidelines, seeking advice where appropriate and be equally effective as a team member.
  • Smart appearance.

The following knowledge and experience are also desirable:

  • Demonstrable experience of work on Travel Behaviour change and Sustainable Travel projects.
  • Experience of working in or with local government/public sector.
  • Knowledge and experience of working with tourism businesses and visitor attractions.
  • Experience of delivering cycling projects.
  • Knowledge of transport issues and solutions applicable to protected landscapes.
  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience of working in a related role which would enable a full understanding of the requirements and challenges the role would bring.
