Based in Hargeisa, Somaliland
Nine months placement

Please note that the selected applicant will be required to take up the placement byNovember 2012.

The Development Worker (DW) will be based in Progressio Somaliland’s office and work closely with the Country Representative, Project Officer, Programme Funding Officer and the Admin/Finance Manager, other DWs in Somaliland, relevant government ministries, local and international NGO partner organisations, and with Progressio’s London-based Policy and Communications team. S/he will design and recommend a sustainable environment development strategy for Progressio in Somaliland, and develop a long term project plan and concept notes. 

The successful candidate should have a degree level qualification or equivalent diploma in environment studies, natural resource management, or a relevant discipline.

A minimum of three years’ work experience within the NGO sector in an organisational development/advisory capacity, and on environmental sustainability programmes, preferably in developing countries, and with civil society organisations and/or government departments is essential. You should also have experience of conducting participatory environmental assessments, developing programme strategies with clear interventions, project plans and concept notes, and of working in a resource poor environment.

An understanding of the issues facing a post-conflict society and of the role which NGOs play in democratisation processes; knowledge/understanding of areas linked to natural resources management and sustainable environment; an understanding of capacity building techniques and methods, and the ability and willingness to share skills and knowledge with staff are essential. You should also have good analytical, prioritising and organising skills; excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to communicate and work with a wide range of people in a participatory manner; tact, maturity, determination and a clear and strategic approach to collaboration and partnership building in a highly politicised environment.

Willingness to undertake road travel in Somaliland; a high degree of self-sufficiency and initiative; cultural sensitivity in an Islamic/Somali environment, and a personal commitment to learning the basics of the Somali language are also required.
