SUSTAINABLE ENERGY INTERN

Background

The UNDP Istanbul Regional Hub (IRH) offers outstanding graduate-level students the opportunity to acquire direct exposure to UNDP’s work in the field of sustainable energy development programming. 

Based on over 20 years of engagements at the local, national, regional and global levels, UNDP is supporting sector- and technology-specific sustainable energy projects at the national and sub-national levels and engages in advocacy campaigns, policy dialogue, knowledge products and coordination efforts at global, regional and national levels. 

UNDP’s sustainable energy programming efforts are in close cooperation with the UN Secretary General’s Sustainable Energy for All initiative (SE4ALL) which aims at achieving three main objectives by 2030: (a) ensure universal access to energy, (b) double the share of renewable energy in global energy mix and (c) double the rate of improvement in energy efficiency. Since its launch, more than 70 Governments from around the world have formally engaged with the Initiative.

The Sustainable Energy intern will work as part of a global team of around 20 energy specialists under the Bureau for Policy and Programme Support (BPPS). UNDP’s global energy policy team is based in the Istanbul Regional Hub. 

 


Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Global Energy Policy Advisor, the intern will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Support the global energy team in developing an internal knowledge management database covering UNDP’s global sustainable energy projects; 
  • Contribute to the development of knowledge and communication products by supporting the global energy team in the implementation of an innovative communication strategy; 
  • Other assistance related to UNDP’s sustainable energy activities, as requested.

Required Skills and Experience

The Sustainable Energy Consultant should possess the following qualifications:

Academic Qualifications/Education: 

  • Currently enrolled in a graduate-level degree programme as a full-time student such as in Business Administration, Economics, Econometrics and Statistics, Engineering, Energy, Social Science or in a related field.

Experience: 

  • Theoretical and practical understanding of sustainable energy development programming;
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge with database management related tasks, is an advantage;
  • Practical knowledge of development work, particularly in the field of sustainable energy, is an advantage.

Language skills: 

  • Excellent English writing and communication skills.

Conditions of Service:

UNDP internships are non-paid and travel expenses are not covered. The costs associated with the latter must be borne by the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or by the student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his or her own arrangements for travel, accommodation, etc
Available for working in the UNDP for a period of 4-6 months (Applicants available for six months are preferred. Applicants must state their availability).

Subsequent Employment: 

The purpose of the Internship Programme is not to lead to further employment with UNDP but to complement an intern’s studies. 
Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship.
It is important to note that interns are responsible to arrange for their own visa and residence documents, and need to plan for these well in advance.
