SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT INTERNSHIP

Location : Bratislava, SLOVAK REPUBLIC
Application Deadline : 14-Sep-12
Type of Contract : Internship
Post Level : Intern
Languages Required :
English
Duration of Initial Contract : estimated 5-6 months

Background

It has been more than two decades since the Brundtland report paved the way to the 1992 Rio summit defining Sustainable Development (SD) as development that can meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. SD requires not depleting natural, knowledge, produced, and human capital available to society over time. It also calls for avoiding the creation of large risks in subsequent generations’ lives. Moreover, due to the nature of SD, there is no single policy decision that can ensure it. Rather, a new, balanced, and context-sensitive policy mix that can function in a multidimensional and cross-sectoral manner is required.

After the Rio+20 Conference on SD, which was held in Rio de Janeiro in July 2012, it became commonly apparent and virtually accepted that the path towards sustainable development is a complex process.  For UNDP’s work this is involving a number of elements, including: following up on Rio+20; preparing for a post-2015 regime; devising UNDP’s strategic plan 2014-2017; supporting the development of meaningful Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); Endorsing the SG’s Sustainable Energy For All campaign (SE4ALL) and contributing to global responses to financial, food, energy, and climate challenges.   UNDP’s actions on these and related topics should therefore be coherent and consistent so that there is maximum impact on assisting countries to transform societies and economies towards a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable future that takes the limits of the natural environment into consideration.

The Energy and Environment Practice is engaged in the Rio+20 follow up process on a number of issues such as the SG’s campaign SE4ALL, SDGs, and other SD and Rio+20 related spin-off activities, including the governance of SD at local, regional, and global level. The objective of this internship is to provide support to the Energy and Environment Practice of BRC on the above-described activities and beyond.
