The Growhampton project:

Roehampton Students’ Union has been awarded the Students’ Green Fund, www.studentsgreenfund.org.uk , for its Growhampton project, www.growhampton.com. As part of the Students’ Green Fund we are one of 25 student union lead projects, being supported and run across the UK, aiming to embed sustainability into everyday life at their respective universities.

The Growhampton project has a strong focus on food growing, upcycling and engaging students with sustainability issues. We will establish growing spaces on campus which will produce fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables. This produce will be available through our hub for sustainability comprising of a coffee shop and food cooperative.

Aims of the project:

  1. Establish a growing space for each college and a main growing site providing produce
  2. Create a hub for sustainability on campus
  3. Deliver a program of training, events and volunteer opportunities
  4. Create a biodiversity trail including interpretation
  5. Integrate Growhampton into research and training by working with academic departments
  6. Establish a green fund to provide opportunities for student and staff lead projects

Objective

The Growhampton project team will work to transform a currently under-utilised social space into a vibrant hub of student engagement and activity. The Growhampton coffee shop will be at the centre of the hub.

The enterprise has two aims, firstly being financially viable to support the continuation of Growhampton and secondly to promote the ethos and support the work of Growhampton. The objective of this role is to manage the Growhampton coffee shop and contribute to its establishment.

The post holder will be instrumental in establishing the coffee shop as the heart of the Growhampton project. It will become regarded for its high quality coffee, excellent customer service and ethical produce which will be local and organic where possible. Coffee will be complemented with a simple menu of soups, salads and sandwiches.

The unique physical structure is being created using two recycled shipping containers. The interior will be created from upcycled materials where possible, creating a rustic, cosy and welcoming atmosphere.

The role aims to engage students, staff and the local community in sustainability by showcasing best practice. This will include maintaining the highest ethical and sustainability standards in procurement, resource-use, waste management, accessibility and equal opportunities.

Central to this role will be commercial acumen. Growhampton was established in September 2013 and is funded through the Student Green Fund until August 2015. The coffee shop will be run as a social enterprise with all profits ring-fenced for continuation of the Growhampton project post-funding, therefore it will need to be run as a financially viable business model.
