The National Center for Appropriate Technology (NCAT) is seeking a qualified candidate to work as a sustainable agriculture specialist. NCAT is a national organization that is mission driven to help people use sustainable technologies to reduce poverty, promote healthy communities and protect natural resources. Qualifications:
Minimum requirements include a BS or MS degree in agronomy, soils, irrigation/water management, livestock management, integrated pest management, sustainable agriculture, horticulture or related field OR a combination of hands-on farming experience, education, and training which demonstrates equivalency. Fluency in written and spoken Spanish is strongly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
You must have a demonstrated affinity for NCAT’s work and mission. This position requires strong communication skills, including excellent writing skills and strong presentation abilities. You must also have strong computer and information management skills. The ideal candidate will have experience in working with a variety of farmers from different cultural groups. The position requires familiarity with California agriculture and CA-based or West Coast agricultural organizations, and the guiding principles of sustainable and organic agriculture. Experience in outreach and working with limited-resource farmers would be beneficial. Other desirable experience and skills include: experience in commercial horticulture or agronomic production; experience in grant writing and proposal development; experience with market gardeners or farmers markets; familiarity and interest with integrated farming systems, concepts of sustainability and environmentally sound practices; and experience in marketing, project development and leadership; experience with farm business development; experience with informational video development and production.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide farmers and ranchers with information and technical assistance on environmentally sound practices for agronomic and horticultural crops and livestock production. This information may be provided via phone, postal mail, email, or in-person hands-on training.
  • Develop collaborations with farm and agriculture organizations and groups that assist farmers, particularly limited-resource farmers.
  • Research, write and edit publications or audio-visual formats on sustainable agriculture topics to assist clients.
  • Seek out projects and opportunities to provide training in Spanish and English to immigrant farmers, new farmers and producers interested in developing more sustainable cropping and marketing systems.
  • Collaborate with other staff as a member of one or more technical teams in developing written materials and projects.
  • Actively seek out sources of funding for new projects, and develop ideas related to sustainable agriculture into fundable projects

Salary and Benefits:
The starting salary range is $38,000 to $50,000 depending on your skills, qualifications, and experience. NCAT provides benefits that include paid vacation and holidays; health, life and disability insurance; a 401(k) plan and a creative teamwork environment.
