The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is a leader in the U.S. Department of Energy’s effort to secure an energy future that is both environmentally and economically sustainable. With locations in Golden, Boulder and Washington D.C., NREL is the primary laboratory for research, development and deployment of renewable energy technologies in the United States. The NREL mission is to develop renewable energy and energy efficient technologies and practices, advance related science and engineering, and transfer knowledge and innovation to address the nation’s energy and environmental goals.
Support NREL’s sustainability strategy, long term goals, short term objectives, metrics tracking and reporting and fosters the adoption of sustainability initiatives within company operations.
Sustainability Program Support:
o Support the implementation of NREL’s sustainability program and initiatives, engage external stakeholders and support the DOE's Sustainability Performance Office.
o Identifying opportunities and coordinate initiatives for sustainability projects
o Track and analyze key sustainability performance metrics
o Research and support the implementation of new legislation, Executive and DOE Orders and internal requirements for NREL sustainable operations
o Coordinate and administer sustainable operations improvement projects.
o Utilize change management strategies for cultural transformation to sustainable operations and research

Sustainability Project Management:
• Support development, planning and implementation of sustainability programs that support NREL, its employees and the public.
• Coordinate NREL’s sustainability metrics reporting to DOE and other federal agencies. Track federal goals and NREL strategic implementation plans.
- Coordinate NREL’s greenhouse gas calculations, reporting and reduction strategies.
-Coordinate facility energy and water audits and reporting to meet the Federal Guiding Principles for High Performance Buildings.
- Coordinate NREL’s purchasing of Renewable Energy Certificates
• Support sustainability related events and activities for employees and external events
• Work with external agencies to establish NREL as a leader in community sustainability

Coordinate Sustainability Communications:
o Strategize and implement communication plans for sustainable initiatives to staff and key stakeholders. Respond to opportunities and requests (i.e. external recognition and awards, DOE data requests, public inquiries, etc.)
o Support updates of the internal and external Sustainable NREL websites
o Spearhead the design, development and publishing of NREL’s Site Sustainability Plan and annual Sustainability Report

Relevant Bachelor's Degree and 5 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.

Or, relevant Master's Degree and 3 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.

Or, relevant PhD or equivalent relevant education/experience.

Or, relevant JD or equivalent relevant education/experience.
Complete understanding and wide application of technical principles, theories and concepts in the field. General knowledge of other related disciplines.

Considerable knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures and practices related to specific field. Strong leadership, project management and problem solving skills. Ability to use various computer software programs.
• Knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures and practices associated with environmental, social and financial management.
• Strong preference for experience in corporate sustainability
• Experience with the US Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification process.
• Self starter with ability to drive independent problem solving
• Strong analytical skills with ability to build excel-based models to drive metrics collection and analysis
• Advanced communications and presentation skills
• Graduate degree in engineering, business administration, environmental science or other applicable field of study.
Project Management Institute certified Project Management Professional preferred.
LEED AP preferred.
