Description

Sustainability Officer

2 year Fixed Contract, Full Time

Our strategy commits SYHA to Tackling the Climate Emergency.

Based in the Housing Services Directorate, you will be working as part of the small but dynamic Sustainability Team, playing an important role in reducing SYHA’s environmental impact, and Tackling the Climate Emergency.

You will work across different teams within SYHA to collate the data necessary to understand the business’s carbon footprint, and to put in place mechanisms for monitoring our impact on an ongoing basis.

You will also play a lead role in the development, delivery and management of an Environmental Management System (EMS) to manage and reduce the impacts of SYHA’s operations. This is an organisation wide piece of work which will touch all areas of the business.

Additionally, you will have the opportunity to get involved in other areas of SYHA’s Sustainability activity, such as work to improve the energy efficiency and reduce the carbon footprint of our existing and new housing stock, and working with our customers to support good energy use behaviours and tackle fuel poverty.

You will be deeply committed to delivering environmental improvement and will be great at engaging and working with others to drive forward Sustainability at SYHA and to support colleagues and Customers in making change.

You will be an excellent communicator both verbally and in writing, and comfortable working at all levels, from front line services to the Board, and with external partners. You will be happy to get ‘hands on’ to work through problems ‘on the ground’ with local teams to develop workable and effective solutions, and have the ability to put new systems and processes to embed change.

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • A relevant qualification in the field of Environmental/Sustainability science/management, and/or, a significant track record working in that sector.
  • Experience or understanding of the delivery and operation of an Environmental Management System
  • A working understanding of housing and domestic energy efficiency.
  • The ability to interpret data, including the use of Excel spreadsheets, and to present results and conclusions in a business reporting style
  • The ability to build rapport with, inform, inspire & support teams & individuals across SYHA, and at all levels to help them on their ‘Sustainability Journey’, whilst remaining sensitive to competing priorities, and likewise with our customers.
  • The reputation for being someone who ‘walks the walk’, does what they promise, and who is strongly motivated to see jobs through to completion to deliver improvement.

South Yorkshire Housing Association (SYHA) is a charitable organisation managing more than 6,000 homes and supporting hundreds of people to lead independent lives.

Some of SYHA’s Benefits:

  • Generous holiday entitlement – 27 days annual leave, statutory bank holidays, plus an additional 4 SYHA days
  • Flexible working options including Flexi Time, Condensed Hours, Part Time
  • Excellent benefits including SYHA Rewards - employee discount scheme, which offers cash back and shopping discounts
  • Westfield Health (employer paid)
