Job Description

The Sustainability Director will develop, guide and execute federal government affairs regulatory and legislative efforts to support Wal-mart and Sam’s Club activities to achieving the company’s three environment goals; 1) to be supplied 100 percent by renewable energy; 2) to create zero waste; and 3) to sell products that sustain our natural resources and the environment.

Primary Job Responsibilities

• Represent Wal-Mart on all federal legislative and regulatory issues related to Wal-Mart’s sustainability issues. This involves direct interaction with senior Presidential Administration officials, members of Congress and staff.
• Develop Wal-Mart’s position on top-priority regulatory and legislative proposals to ensure alignment with the company’s sustainability goals and other corporate objectives.
• Develop and execute legislative and regulations that have a favorable impact on Wal-Mart’s operations, associates and customers. This position is responsible for achievement of key business objectives with respect to federal policy initiatives.
• Develop and execute close working relationships with senior and executive management involved in, but not limited to, Wal-Mart’s Sustainability efforts. This includes building relationships with the executives in charge of Wal-Mart’s 14 Sustainable Value Networks it identify priority regulatory and legislative catalysts and barriers to success in achieving Wal-Mart’s sustainability goals.
• Develop, implement and direct a long term comprehensive strategy to position Wal-Mart in various policy dialogues. Work to establish Wal-Mart as a leader in the development of policies related to the economy generally, foreign policy and various sectors of the economy.
• Work with Sustainability Communications Team (that is made up of Home Office and field associates representing: Corporate Communications, Public Affairs, Marketing, walmartstores.com, Wal-Mart Foundation, Corporate Affairs, Sam’s Club Communications, International,) to develop key message points related to Wal-Mart business and providing updates to keep management informed on previously stated matters, as well as position on legislative and regulatory proposal area consistent.
• Analyze and make decisions on behalf of Wal-Mart in regard to emerging and existing legislative and regulatory development related to issue portfolios t hat potentially could impact Wal-Mart. Identify and develop Wal-Mart’s strategic response.
• Various Outreach Management: Work with colleagues in Corporate Affairs to manager department’s outreach initiatives and relationships among trade associates, think tanks, non-governmental organizations, and foundations. Groups to include but not limited to small business community, appropriate ethnic groups, environmental community, trade and foreign policy groups; as well as industry organizations (e.g., grocery retail business.)
• Supervise day-to-day responsibilities of one to two Managers/Senior Managers of Federal Government Relations including their career development.
• Manager outside relationships with suppliers and outside consultants. Actively participate in industry and coalition meetings where appropriate. Develop, execute and manager close working relationships with senior and executive management on behalf of the company with these groups.
• Provide leadership and counsel with respect to strategic use of the Foundation and WAL- PAC funds to support specific issues and outreach portfolio; more broadly the overall giving strategy.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree required.
• Capital Hill experience in the relevant areas.

Preferred Requirements

• Advanced degree.
• 3-5 years House or Senate relevant Committee experience.
