This position is within Atkins Highways and Transportation business covering policy and planning, intelligent transport systems, traffic engineering, public realm, highway design, maintenance and operations of road networks and related highway and transportation services.
The Atkins Highways and Transportation business is a business of approximately 3000 staff representing the largest consultancy in he UK. Continued expansion of the business is based on a combination of long-term partnering contracts to deliver highways and transportation services, major project design and advisory services on transport policy, investment and capital programmes and technology applications. Sustainability and, more specifically, carbon criticality is a key driver at the heart of our business strategy. Atkins has committed to working with its customers to change how we plan and design capital programmes such that we reduce carbon emissions in the construction, operation and maintenance of transport infrastructure, including influencing and developing associated transport and land-use policy. Job Description We are looking for a sustainability champion for Highways and Transportation to work at a Director level, engaging with clients, the H&T board, other experts on carbon and sustainability across the Atkins Group and with project managers and other staffThe role will include: - Securing consultancy work advising customers at national, regional and local level on the sustainability agenda and how they should be responding
- Working as part of client organisation management teams to initiate changes in approaches to business and their capital programmes in order to achieve carbon reduction
- Providing expert advice and analysis into projects on sustainability action plans, carbon footprints and mitigation measures
- Raising awareness of sustainability across the H&T business and ensuring carbon literacy is embedded in much of the businesses activities and thinking
- Providing to Atkins partners and staff regular updates on policy, regulatory and other changes affecting approaches and commitments to sustainability
- Providing visible thought leadership on carbon criticality in the transport sector – speaking at conferences and industry events
Expert knowledge and an enthusiasm for learning in a fast paced environment on sustainability and carbon agendas A strong knowledge of the UK highways and transportation sector and an understanding of the policy, regulatory and funding contexts A proven track record as a transport professional in a senior position An established profile in the industry and a customer portfolio Experience in the technical management and direction of advisory projects Excellent analytical skills able to determine key findings from complex and impartial evidence/data sets and able to formulate and communicate clear thinking on how carbon reduction can be best achieved in the transport sector Appreciation of developing sustainability agendas and carbon at an international level including EC initiatives such as European Trading Schemes

Business development – seeking out and selecting opportunities for securing advisory and technical support services to customers in developing their sustainability and carbon reduction action plans Project direction and management – including financial control and forecasting, client relationship management and project team leadership Business planning – working with business heads to shape their business plans and actions such that carbon is integral to what they do Thought leadership and profile raising – ensuring you and Atkins are acknowledged for innovative and smart thinking on sustainability issues Knowledge management – communicating with H&T staff and wider Atkins to share and disseminate knowledge in order to maximise awareness of carbon agendas and to maximise our competitive advantage in how we use this knowledge

Applicants should have the ability to work on a diverse range of projects under his/her own initiative with excellent communication skills and a strong commitment to winning work, nurturing client relationships and networking across Atkins and the company. Good organisation and leadership skills and the ability to influence and win confidence of others are necessary attributes for the post. An ability to work as a team with clients, business partners and colleagues across the Atkins Group will be important. The candidate will need to be a clear thinker, capable of writing high quality reports and comfortable with engaging with senior decision –makers.
