What is the purpose of the role?


The main purpose of the role is to promote and support the company wide sustainability strategy and enable Thames Water to achieve leadership in sustainability and environmental protection.

What will this role involve?
- To support the sustainability agenda across the company, addressing cultural change and ensuring an initial core focus on achieving excellence in protection of biodiversity and the natural environment
- To work in collaboration with various individuals and groups, and lead projects and partnership with key external organisations, in order to achieve enhanced brand, reputation and credibility; improved employee pride and engagement; greater stakeholder recognition of our commitment and achievements, and delivery of a range of business efficiencies.
- Leading and driving employee engagement on sustainability, supporting business units in delivering on our sustainability agenda, and embedding sustainability in all aspects of our business.
- Seeking out examples of best practice and win:win solutions (operational: environmental) and promoting internally and externally.
- Identifying risks on sustainability and implementing or facilitating the necessary mitigation to minimise/control such risks.
- Support the preparation of Thames Water's various Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability reports
- Support relationships with key external stakeholders achieving endorsement of our key sustainability and corporate responsibility programmes, projects and partnerships.
- Implement benchmarking to ensure the team understands the company's performance and industry positioning across the broad range of environmental and sustainability issues and building customer awareness of achievement as a means of building support for company activities.

What are we looking for?


You will possess a Degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject with several years relevant experience (professional membership, chartership and/or post-graduate qualification advantageous).
You will have a demonstrable track record of developing and managing a sustainability programme in a large or complex organisation, with a history of designing and delivering environmentally sustainable solutions in a large organisation.
A detailed understanding of the key principles of sustainability (environmental, social, economic, ethical) - both current and emerging issues is essential for this role, together with demonstrable experience of policy and strategy development and implementation. The ability to identify a good news story will also be critical to the perception and achievement of the business objectives both internally and externally. Therefore, the ability to work collaboratively with a wide array of both external and internal stakeholders will be essential. You will be creative with the ability to challenge current practices and to encourage innovation - this role is for someone who is able to bring a new dimension to Thames Water.

This role will be based at Clearwater Court in the centre of Reading.
