Job Type: Intern, Clerk and Volunteer

Earthjustice's International Program uses the power of the law to protect the environment and human health worldwide. We represent public interest and community groups in international tribunals and domestic courts in our work to establish, strengthen, and enforce national and international legal protections for the environment, public health, and human and environmental rights.

One of the priorities of Earthjustice’s International Program is to spread the use of law and litigation as a tool for promoting more effective environmental protection in Latin America. We partner with local groups and organizations throughout the hemisphere to field multinational teams of lawyers and scientists to defend threatened ecosystems and the human communities that depend on them. Working together, we promote transnational collaboration, cultivate the power of international law, and encourage citizen enforcement and public participation to tackle a range of environmental crises—the decline of freshwater resources, the proliferation of toxins, climate change, and the decimation of vulnerable biodiversity. For more information about the projects Earthjustice is working on with its Latin American partners, visit www.aida-americas.org.

During the summer, we usually have one or two part- or full-time interns. Intern assignments vary depending on candidates’ background, abilities as well as our programmatic needs. Assignments may include: environmental policy research and analysis, assisting with communications efforts and translation, providing support to attorneys working on a variety of environmental issues throughout Latin America, or general administrative support. Opportunities may exist with our Latin American partners and qualified candidates may be eligible for placement in Latin America.

Qualifications for the position include strong research, analytical and writing skills and a demonstrated interest in international environmental issues and/or the Americas. High competence in Spanish (reading, writing, speaking) is required.

International Program internships offer extensive exposure to the operations of the non-profit legal community and to international environmental work. Additionally, as part of Earthjustice’s International Program, interns have the opportunity to learn about the legal work of Earthjustice and participate in office-wide activities. We have a casual office environment and are located one block from public transportation (Embarcadero BART station) in downtown San Francisco.

To apply, please submit a cover letter, resume, brief writing sample and three references to Lisa Nessan at eajusintl@earthjustice.org. Please write “Summer Intern” in the subject line of your e-mail.
