The National Renewable Energy Laboratory's (NREL) National Bioenergy Center has an immediate opening for a part-time undergraduate student or graduate internship in Golden, Colorado.
The NREL National Bioenergy Center group is conducting research in the field of biomass pretreatment, lignin valorization, chemical catalyst design, and enzymatic hydrolysis assays. The intern will assist in the synthesis, characterization, and purification of lignin model compounds and chemical catalysts as well as the characterization of reaction products. Additionally, the intern will assist in biomass pretreatment and catalyst screening experiments. This is an excellent opportunity for a student who desires to obtain relevant laboratory experience in preparation for graduate school or a career in the chemical industry.
Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a degree granting program at an accredited institution.

Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Must have some experience with organic chemistry, preferably in a 2nd level organic chemistry class now, or has organic chemistry with a high success rate recently. Ability to conduct laboratory experiments, sometimes with minimal supervision, with the utmost regard to safety is required. Familiarity with relevant general synthetic, spectroscopic, and chromatographic techniques is desirable but not required.
An undergraduate/graduate student in chemistry with a desire to work in a laboratory setting and gain experience in biofuels research.
We may hire more than one intern, and we are looking for the following types of backgrounds: biology/biologist, biochemist, microbiology, organic chemistry. Also, exposure to one or more of the following: lab environment, run reactions at high temperatures and high pressure (bench top), used shake flask, used LCMS, GCMS, enzyme assays. The ideal candidate will have self confidence and comfort with presentations.
