Position Summary

TU's Potomac Headwaters Home Rivers Initiative is seeking a Stream Restoration Specialist with natural stream design expertise to provide technical assistance in West Virginia's Potomac Watershed and to design and implement stream restoration projects improving brook trout habitat and water quality. TU's Potomac Headwaters restoration and conservation efforts are focused on headwater mountain tributaries in West Virginia's Potomac Watershed. Workspace for the Stream Restoration Specialist will be provided in the TU Thomas, WV office as well as an NRCS field office. Frequent travel throughout the Potomac Watershed in WV will be required. The position is full-time with benefits. Salary is commensurate with experience.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct stream geomorphic surveys (dimension, pattern, profile, substrate), and stream habitat assessments, as well as aquatic passage assessments, for reference reaches and impaired stream reaches;
  • Design and oversee the construction of habitat improvement, bank stabilization and aquatic organism projects;
  • Provide budget and work estimates;
  • Assist with permitting, funding and coordinating implementation of restoration projects;
  • Implement multiple restoration projects simultaneously;
  • Provide performance and financial reports in support of the work accomplished;

Qualifications

  • A B.S. in a field related to fisheries management, aquatic ecology, watershed management, geomorphology, or biological systems engineering. An advanced degree in one of these fields is a plus.
  • Expertise in natural stream design techniques and demonstrated ability to design and oversee the installation of comprehensive habitat improvement projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, implement, and supervise multiphase stream restoration projects.
  • Experience with project and grant management, and project permitting.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of stakeholders including farmers, biologists, engineers, other landowners, and state and federal agencies.
  • Working knowledge of principles and practices of fisheries and aquatic resource management with a particular emphasis on stream habitat requirements of eastern brook trout.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience with ESRI GIS, Rivermorph, and CAD software is preferred.
  • Passion for protecting and restoring trout populations and their watersheds.
